Hi there,

has anyone ever tried to disassemble a z820 workstation with a SAS based LTO-5 drive? What cables would be needed for power and SAS signal?

This is the back of the drive ...

the SAS drive must be connected to the z820's onboard LSI controller which supports both SAS and SATA devices

the z820 lsi ports are along the bottom edge of the board and are white in color

the same data/power cable is used for both SATA and SAS devices, however your drive uses a "combined" pwr/data connector instead of seperate ones at the drive end. this connector will have a normal sata/SAS data connector and a SATA or Molex power connector at the other end

the z820 bios has a "LSI" sub bios for setting the LSI controllers configurable settings

usually on a z820 you can disable the  LSI bios to speed up the boot sequence if the attached devices are not a boot device

just make sure not to disable the LSI device itself in the bios, as then windows will no longer see the controller itself

Thank you for this information. The SAS connector on the mainboard does not carry power, so I would need a cable like this?

for your tape drive, this one (with only one data cable)  is preferred,

your cable is used when using a dual port SAS drive configuration
