the z230 officially supports the 4790, however using this cpu requires non EEC ram and the upgraded cpu cooler

Thanks, I can see it does support the 4790, i have a 4790k on its way im hoping that works. (Not officially supported)

I cant find anyone who has successfully installed the "K"

HP Recommended

installing a 4970 "K" cpu is pointless as the z230 does not support the unlocked multiplier of the 4970K

and that's the only difference between a a 4970 and a 4970K

3.6 vs 4.0 GHz?

or is this speed only unlocked with an overclock?

HP Recommended

you really need to start paying attention when reading...................

as per the intel specs, 3.6 is BASE frequency, with 4.0 being the max  TURBO boost frequency

I'm no guru mate but what I'm reading is the 4790 has a base of 3.6 and the K is 4.0?

I'm not sure, hence why I'm asking.

HP Recommended

and again it seems you replied without reading the links i provided that go into detail on what turbo boost is

i also included the intel cpu link that shows the 4090 cpu specs , including the base/turbo frequencies

and again,.................one last time, the only difference between a Intel 4090 and a 4090K is that the "K" suffix cpu's have a unlocked multiplier which allows some (not the z workstations) performance/enthusiast motherboards via the bios, to increase the multiplier ratio which results in a possible overclock of the cpu base frequency not all cpu's will overclock, the "K" suffix simply allows you to try a overclock

please READ this link:

I appreciate your time mate.

no one likes an internet troll though.

if you can highlight where it says the base frequency advertised is only when it's overclocked I'll stand corrected!

HP Recommended

why not try looking at the intel web page link that i previously provided

and look at the two lines marked base frequency (3.60)  and turbo frequency (4.00)

then read the second link i provided that explains in detail what turbo boost is and how it works

those two links will go a long way in getting you to understand how modern cpu's overclock and why a "K" suffix cpu is a poor choice for the z230 pricewise
