HP Compaq 8100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello community of HP. I have been trying to upgrade my system for some time now and it seems no matter what I do I cannot get these sticks I have purchased to work in my PC.

My full specifications are below.

CPU: Intel core i5 650 1st gen

Memory: 2x2GB 1333MHz non ECC

Storage: 1TB Seagate HDD

GPU: GT 1030 SFF OC

PSU: Default shipped with the unit

The new memory specifications below.

2x4GB 1333MHz non ECC, and is on 10600

I am unsure of what is causing the issue, and want to fix it because I cannot afford more memory at this time.

The exact outcome is a single boot failure and reboot, and then my power supply becomes very loud with no video output.

Thanks!

the 8100 uses slots 1/3 as the first bank of ram, with bank 2 using slots 2/4

the memory modules "Rank" must match in each ram bank (IE- rank=2) check ram label for rank info

16 meg is all HP certified for this model

if using only 2 ram modules you will use one white and one black (dual memory channel mode)

if using 4 modules all slots filled using 2x8 dimms

I have already done what you suggested but I am a wee bit confused on the "Rank" aspect and how it would be labeled on my DIMM.

I will type out the labels below for both what came with the machine and the new DIMM's.

Old:

(Samsung) 2GB 1Rx8 PC3-10600U-09-10-A0

M378B5773CH0-CH9 1116

New:

(A-TECH) 4GB DDR3 PC3-10600 DIMM/1333MHz

2rx8 1.5v 89365

6521 AA 5514 L/H445/V

I am gonna be honest, I have no real clue what half of that means. But I hope you can try and help me understand what is going on.

Note: The upgrade I am going for is a replacement of the prior two 2GB sticks so I had them in correctly.

the system you have is quite picky on ram, i have a 8300/6300 and have also come across ram issues.

you need 10600U (unbuffered) ram 10600R (Registered) will not work, again "U" = good R= Bad for your system

bad ram (registered)

https://www.amazon.sa/-/en/6521-AA-5514-REGISTERED-Certified/dp/B081TKX6F5

not all memory modules will work in these systems you really need to use approved memory

visit the micron website for approved ram

https://www.crucial.com/products/memory

in your listing of the ram specs, note the  "2Rx8" and "1Rx8"   2R= rank=2, and 1R=Rank=1

it's possible to get 4GB ram in R1 and R2, which can not be mixed together in a memory bank

it's possible to get 8GB ram in R2 and R4, which can not be mixed together in a memory bank

your system has two memory banks (black and white dimm slots) each bank uses two dimms

other systems can have more banks, depending on the memory controller used
