Z400
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi All,

I bought a EVGA GTX 970 ftw for my HP Z400 (6 dim). The card said it was a tdp of 150W, so I ordered it without giving much thought to it's physical power connector requirements (I am very green with pc building/modifying).

The GTX 970 ftw requires two 6 pin power connectors, and I know the 475W power supply with my Z400 only has one 6 pin power connector available.

Can someone who is experienced with this please tell me what power adapters I will need in order to get another 6 pin power connector to plug into the 970.

My cpu has a tdp of 90W, I have one 500Gb SSD for storage, and six 2 Gb ram sticks installed.

read my reply it covers how to stay within the HP wattage specs for your power supply

or simply find the highest model card HP supported on the z400 quickspec, note the wattage and stay within it

The Z400 mostly came with a 475W power supply, but there also was the 600W version.  That has two 6-wire PCIe supplemental power cables whereas the usual one only has one.

You could buy a 600W version.... here are the spares and assembly part numbers, and search for both (which gets you the same unit):    626322-001    626409-001

Note on the images of the specs label on the PSU that the 600W one has an added 12VDC cable... that is the second video power cable.  Note it has 18A current rating.  The one on the 475W label also has 18A rating.  Normal ATX power rating for these cables is 75W.  The rating for these from HP are 12 x 18 = 216W.  So, now you need to read up on our posts on how to pick a 6 pin to two 6-pin splitter.  HP sells some, posted about in the forum with part numbers but they cost an arm and a leg.

The point is that with some use of the search bar near the top left of every forum page here you will find your answers.
