Hello, I'm planning to make a purchase on a future purchase HP EliteDesk 800 G4 from eBay HP EliteDesk 800 G4. I would like to know what PSU & GPU (Prefer NVidia). I think the CPU is good enough & simple RAM upgrade. Main goal is somwhat gaming (emulation & some Triple-A titles) & HTPC with of course daily task.

Thanks

@NonSequitur777 what would be your input.

@gurumx5,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The HP EliteDesk 800 G4 TWR eBay purchase option is a very good one: it already has 16GB RAM, an 8th gen Intel Core processor -probably an i5-8400 or i5-8500, a 256GB SATA SSD primary (boot) drive, and Windows 11 Pro.

As you probably know, this desktop platform has tremendous upgrade potential.

Where to begin?

I would purchase a 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD and making that your primary (boot) drive.  The 800 G4 has two M.2 NVMe SSD slots.

Some quality/affordable M.2 NVMe SSD purchase options I would look into:

1TB Crucial P3 Plus (CT1000P3PSSD8) https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Plus-PCIe-NAND-5000MB/dp/B0B25NXWC7/ref=sr_1_1?crid=DW4TXAVL37DH&dib=...

1TB Silicon Power UD90 (SP01KGBP44UD9005) https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-UD90-NVMe-SP01KGBP44UD9005/dp/B0B217LZBG/ref=sr_1_15?crid=BT10S...

1TB Silicon Power A60 (SP001TBP34A60M28) https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-NVMe-Gen3x4-SP001TBP34A60M28/dp/B07ZGJVTZK/ref=sr_1_10?crid=BT1...

But there are many more outstanding 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD purchase options around the same 'sweet spot' pricing, such as the: Predator GM7000, Samsung 990 Plus, and the PNY CS1030.

The 256GB SATA SSD isn't large enough to be a meaningful secondary storage drive, and I would suggest you replace it or add an additional larger capacity SATA SSD, and/or a secondary M.2 NVMe SSD.

RAM: this PC probably got 2x8GB RAM sticks -let me know what brand and model it comes with, and I would recommend getting an additional 2x8GB RAM -preferably the same brand & model.

The stock 250-watt power supply can be upgraded -depending what graphics card you want, with the following PSU upgrade options:

400-watt with p/n: L04618-800 / 942332-001

500-watt with p/n: 901759-013 / L77487-003 / L77487-001 / L05757-800 / 913290-001 / L89233-001 / L81009-800

650-watt with p/n: L57253-003 / L36049-003

For the 250-watt PSU you could consider something like: GTX 1050 Ti (75-watt TDP), RX 6400 (53-watt TDP), GTX 1650 (75-watt TDP) -without external 6-pin connector, or the low-profile RTX 3050 (70-watt TDP) -with the full-size PCIe bracket.

If you want better GPU options, you'll have to upgrade your power supply too.

So, that was my first response exclusively for you.

Kind Regards,

Now just waiting for the computered to be delivered.
Is 64GB max ram for this computer?

As for GPU, I have these in mind
Gigabyte 5060 Windforce 8GB

Msi 3060 Ventus 2x 12GB

Msi 5060 Shadow 8GB

I'm also debating a Ti but not sure it's gonna benefit me. GPU selections are still up in the air.

Also want to know if there's any benefit upgrading CPU cooler or add fans to the case.

@gurumx5,

Yes, you can install up to 4x16GB of DDR4 2666 MHz UDIMM RAM, such as this User with 4x16GB of Kingston Fury with p/n: KF2666C16D4/16GX did that as seen here: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 TWR Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Any of the GPUs you showed would be fine.  Btw, what power supply are you going to install?

You'll always benefit from installing one or more additional cooling fans as it will substantially benefit the internal airflow, like I recently applied that in my HP EliteDesk 800 G3 TWR upgrade project: Solved: Upgrading an HP EliteDesk 800 G3 TWR - HP Support Community - 9399982.

Well the computer was delivered today. Boot it up to make sure everything works. Computer comes with Intel i5-8500 & I believe comes with 500W PSU. Saved some money there.

Also I'm trying to figure out how & which M.2 WLAN 2230 w/Antenna  is compatible.

Do you have any suggestions on CPU cooler?

Thanks

@gurumx5,

This 95-watt rated HP CPU heatsink/cooler with p/n: 644724-001 should work for you, such as this eBay purchase option: https://www.ebay.com/itm/186388215442?_skw=644724-001&epid=19018434644&itmmeta=01JX1MGA9R9DEASFC65HK....

Thank you. Gonna add it to list of purchase.

What's your recommendation on AMD GPU? Is Vulkan better on AMD?

Just keeping my options open.

Thanks

@gurumx5,

I would recommend a Nvidia card over an AMD card.

That said, the best compatible AMD cards for your HP EliteDesk 800 G4 MT with the 500-watt power supply in mind would be an RX 7600 XT 16GB GDDR6 such as this outstanding option: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/asus-dual-rx-7600-xt-oc.b11499 or an RX 6650 XT 8GB GDDR6, such as this high-end option: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/asus-rog-strix-rx-6650-xt-gaming-oc.b9677.

Comparatively, this would be an RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7, such as this Amazon purchase option offered for less than $300: https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-GeForce-WINDFORCE-Graphics-GV-N5060WF2OC-8GD/dp/B0F8LDHQ7Y/ref=sr_1_....

Gotcha. Just looking at options.

Out of curiosity. Would the 500W PSU handle 5070?

Just trying to see if my wallet allows 5060 Ti 8GB/16GB or 5070 12GB.

HP Recommended

@gurumx5,

Given that an RTX 5070 has a 250-watt TDP and that even TechPowerUp recommends a minimum 600-watt power supply, the 180-watt TDP RTX 5060 Ti 8GB or better still: the 16GB variant would be your best graphics card option.
