HP Z240 Tower Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a "HP Z240 Tower Workstation". I intend to setup one or two SAS HDD (Non-RAID, Non-JBOD). But my PC do not have SAS port. I see "LSI 9212-4i SAS 6GB 4-port RAID Card" in link of HP:

http://www8.hp.com/emea_middle_east/en/products/oas/product-detail.html?oid=4290437

In "Features": "The LSI 9212 SAS HBA is compatible with the HP Z400 and Z600 workstations. "

and link of scsi4me:
http://www.scsi4me.com/hp-lsi-sas-9212-4ipci-express-6gb-s-sas-pcie-2-0x8-host-bus-adapter.html

In "System Requirements": "Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Edition, Microsoft Windows Vista Business, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, Microsoft Windows Vista Business 64-bit Edition"

In "Compatible With" : "HP Z400 Workstation, HP Z420 Workstation, HP Z600 Workstation, HP Z620 Workstation, HP Z800 Workstation"

So my question is:
This card is compatible (100%) with "HP Z240 Tower Workstation" ?
and "Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 1709" support driver for it ?

In case NOT compatible, which SAS card is suitable, you can suggest me ?

Please help me ! ^_^

the HP 9212 card is not a true raid card as it lacks a onboard CPU and ram it uses the computers cpu to work and that's fine as long as you know the limitations of this which are that raid is limited to  RAID 0, 1, 1E and 10 only

the HP firmware should also support JBOD  (Just a bunch Of Disks) besides the raid modes listed above.

(if you have the card or can get it cheap go for it)

if it does not you can replace the  "IR" firmware with "IT" firmware that does not have any raid features, and turns the card into a plain Host Buss Adapter "HBA" Card meaning it simply adds 4 more SAS/SATA ports without any other driver

i've done the firmware conversions many times, and it's not hard as long as you read the directions first. and ask about any part you are unsure about

the dell perc H310 card, uses the same LSI chip as the 9212, and i know  it supports JBOD and True raid on it's custom firmware as i run one in my z820 i highly recomend this card if all you want to do is add 2 non raid drives

Hi DGroves, thanks for your suggestion!

My configuration is very simple. I use one or two SAS HDD (Non-RAID, Non-JBOD).

About "HP LSI 9212-4i SAS 6GB 4-port RAID Card":

My HP Z240 have one PCIe x16 slot (empty). Are you sure, after plugging this card. The BIOS will recognize it ?

With my configuration case above. If i DO NOT replace the "IR" firmware with "IT" firmware. Is this card still normally operating in Windows 10 pro 64 (No need to install additional drivers) ? And are the following parameters:

  • PCI Bus: 8-lane, 5GT/s PCI Express 2.0
  • PCI Data Burst Transfer Rate: Half Duplex, x4 PCIe 2000 MB/s
    Full Duplex, x8 PCIe 4000 MB/s
  • SAS Bandwidth: Half Duplex Single lane - 600 MB/s
    Wide Port (2 lanes) - 1200 MB/s
    Wide Port (4 lanes) - 2400 MB/s
  • Full Duplex Single SAS Lane - 1200 MB/s
    Wide Port (2 lanes) -2400 MB/s
    Wide Port (4 lanes) - 4800 MB/s

still like as specification document ?

        ----------------------------------
About "DELL perc H310 card":
I read specification document, I understand it's True raid because it is designed for server.
OS Support:

  • Microsoft ® Windows Server ® 2008 R2 SP2
    Red Hat ® Enterprise Linux ® 5.7
    Red Hat ® Enterprise Linux ® 6.1
    SUSE ® Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP4
    SUSE ® Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2

whereas, " HP LSI 9212-4i SAS 6GB 4-port RAID Card" is for PC/Worstation:
OS Support:

  • Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional, XP Professional 64-bit Genuine
    Windows Vista® Business 32-bit and, 64-bit Genuine
    Windows 7 Professional 32-bit and 64-bit.
    Linux SLED and RHEL.

So, with my configuration case above, this card is compatible (100%) with "HP Z240 Tower Workstation" ?
and "Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 1709" support driver for it ?

        ----------------------------------
An another choice:

May be i will use "LSI SAS9211-4i 4-port, 6Gb/s SAS+SATA to PCI Express Host Bus Adapter". I guess it is suitable for my configuration case above. But i still hesitate, because it only support "Half Duplex" without "Full Duplex" ? :Crying:

I found some technical document as below:

I did not find any words like "full duplex" ? So, this document is missing or incorrect ?

Are there any SAS HBA card only support "Half Duplex" without "Full Duplex" ?
So "full duplex" is the DEFAULT feature supported by any SAS Card ?

Please help me!

please take the time to read several SCSI/SAS primers before proceeding further you obviously have limited experence with the terms being used and therefor have no idea just what you need or why

(i really don't feel like correcting all of the wrong asumptions you have posted in responce to my previous reply)

but i will point out that you have to be using either JBOD "or" RAID if accessing a hard drive, no matter if connected to the motherboard or from a addin card,

Hi,

what i can say is that the LSI 9212 works fine under Windows 10 Pro.
in IT mode and Raid mode. I would prefer the IT Firmware.

I had to add a 40x40mm Fan because the Card is very HOT after a few minutes.

i Had 2 SAS drives (in SW Raid 1 under Windows) and 2 SATA SSD drives.

now i use a LSI 9270 because i wanted to use more drives. (Had a 4x 2.5" in the 5.25" hole)

HP Recommended

2 SAS Hard Disk drives plus 2 SATA SSD drives in a 4x 2.5" enclosure in the 5.25" bay: What size of Fan do you think is needed to keep them cool?

After all, as you stated, you are aware of a very HOT controller card, so it is recommended that you also take similar action to protect the frying drives in their tight congested enclosure.

HP Recommended

the enclosure has 2 Fans, i think 40x40mm.

and one 40x40mm Fan on the Heatsink of the LSI Controller
