Z840
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am thinking of upgrading the Z800 to a Z840 , but the question is , can i switch the hard drives from one to another. I do have raid setup on 2 of the drives , can i swap them over and keep the info on them , or would i loose all the data on those drives? Any help would be appreciated .

Thanks

Rick

yes you can move the drives, the LSI controller chips on each system are compatible however this must be done correctly

on the z800 enter the LSI BIOS section and note the raid mode (0/1/5)

on the current system (z800) note  which SAS cable on each drive in the hotswap bays goes to which LSI SAS port on the motherboard and duplicate it on the z840 (it's best to move the drives one by one)

start the new system enter the LSI Bios and it should detect the existing array and offer to import the array settings

if auto detect fails, recreate/recover the array in the LSI Bios by selecting each drive  and the raid type (0/1/5) DO NOT INITIALIZE/Format DRIVES!!!!  just save the settings
