z600
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have recently purchased an HP Z600 with 2 x e5504 , it runs without issue, when I try to upgrade using ANY 55xx/56xx chip other than the 5504 it will not post...it runs for about 15 secs then fans spin up to 100%. I have tried resetting bios, reflashing to 3.61, every trial and error I can think of...1 cpu, 2 cpu, everything removed but cpu , with exactly the same results . is there something in bios that prevents the removal and replacement of parts ?

@Ambisagrus , welcome back to the forum.

Here is the Product Specifications page for the workstation.  If you look at the section titled "Processors" there is a list of compatible processors.  These have been fully tested to assure that they are compatible with the motherboard.  I checked the Intel Xeon Processor X5570 QC 2.93 GHz, 95W, 8M cache, 6.40GT/s QPI, DDR3 1333 MHz, HT, Turbo and it has been Discontinued.

There is nothing in the BIOS that should prevent you from upgrading any of the components.

Thank you Old_Geekster for at least looking at the post and giving an answer. Yes the cpu is discontinued by intel but there are plenty out there roaming wild and free and should still work in a z600...the problem is that it will not accept any change of cpu, single socket or dual. All the cpu's I try are listed as compatible but this board refuses any change . I personally could not see any problems in bios that would cause this problem and it has left me completely flummoxed...There are 1 or 2 (grabbing at straws) ideas I can try but my patience is now low and my options pretty much dwindled. It has another issue shut it down and then restart and  it is fine , restart it from windows or the rest button and it doesn't boot and the fans go haywire, to resolve this the power cord has to be disconnected and the board drained of power before a reboot can be done .

You are welcome, @Ambisagrus!

The only other suggestion that I can make is, test the power supply unit (PSU) to see if it is good.  I have seen some problems caused by a failing PSU that you would never attribute to it.

Hi the power supple seems fine, I would need a multimeter or psu tester to know for sure that it was fully working and that would only tell me that the wattages/voltages and amps were ok as it was on, I would need to test it under load to see any fluctuations that might occur and I don't have the equipment .

UPDATE:- I bought an e5507 to see if it would accept that, it does , also If I put the E5507 in slot 2 (1) with ram then put an x5570 in slot 1(0) with 0 ram then as soon as I get slot 2 to accept the e5507 I can put ram into dimms for cpu 0 and boot the system ...it will then run the 5570 as an e5507 ....think the bios is shot or some small component that communicates between the cpu slots and the bios is defective .

Hi,

you should and most times u could NEVER Mix CPU Types.
When u want to use 2 CPU´s than they must exactly same Type and microcode.
Otherwise u will always have problems.

@Ambisagrus, @Bernd83HN is correct.  Here is the section for installing a second processor:

Read it carefully to assure that you have the configuration correct!  This information is found in the User Guides.

I already know how to install a second processor, my surprise is the way in which this board is behaving, it will not take any processors other than the e550x . the only way to get it to accept any other processor was to get one accepted into slot 1 while slot 0 was populated with the 5570, with ram in dimms for slot 1 but no ram for slot 0, once the slot 1 cpu is up and running add the ram for slot 0 and it will run slot 1 as if it was populated by an identical cpu too slot 1, running an e5507 and an x5570 as if they are both e5507. the board should not allow any of this to occur but it does that is why I think the bios chip or other component that allows the chips to communicate with the board is faulty. it runs with 1 e5507 and 1 x5570, both seen as e5507 , there have been no problems with it running this way at all and my son is using it to play his games on with an nvidia gtx 1030.

@Ambisagrus, you have come up with a situation that I have never seen on this Forum in 15+ years.  What you have described should not happen according to the specs.  I can't explain it!
