I've keep my xw8400 alive and well for all these years. It seems now that death is approaching for certain applications. I've heard that Autocad required CPUs with SSE4 and now as of the last version of Photoshop 2021 that Adobe is also requiring SSE4.2 and greater. Here's the info from Adobe
- To determine if your CPU meets this SSE version support requirement, see Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog and look in or near the 4th line.
- Adobe Photoshop Version: 22.0.0 20200921.m.1053 2020/09/21: 0fb66349f4 x64
- Number of Launches: 6
- Operating System: Mac OS 10.15.5
- System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:14, Stepping:3 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2, SSE3,SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AVX, AVX2, HyperThreading
I could not find any CPU compatible with this server which has SSE4.2 or greater.
So I guess that's it. If you must upgrade Photoshop then you can't do so on an XW8400 workstation.

Time to move on. You surely got your money's worth. I'd recommend looking into the Z420 v2 or the Z620 v2 workstations with latest BIOS and all the tuning available here on the forum. 2013 boot block date. Quadro K2200 video card. At least 32 GB RAM starting with 4 1866 MHz 8GB RAM sticks (roughly 14.00 USD/stick, retired server RAM off eBay).
Z440 double cooling heatsink/fan. ZX20 plug and play active memory cooler fits perfectly over that. Front case fan. SSD of course... don't mess with M.2 stick for this build. E5-1660 v2 processor, overclocked if you wish. Rocket ship on a budget. Latest W10Pro64 build.
