Z820
Linux

Hi,

I’m looking for an inexpensive way of getting into machine learning and have purchased two Nvidia Tesla M40s. On my search to find the best possible, non-server chassis to run these in a Z820 came up. Is this system compatible with the M40?  I’ll be running these under Linux.

I’ve already addressed any power and cooling issues that may come up so I really just need to know if the BIOS is compatible. I’ve had a lot of issue with similar generation ‘workstations’ not allowing over 4Gb on a GPU.  I’ve heard good things about the Z820, so I’m hoping this legacy workstation helps me with using my legacy Tesla cards.

Regards,

if the z820 has the optional 1125 watt supply you can safely run one M40 card which will draw 250 watts if using 150 watt dual cpu's running two M40's will place you just over the HP limit, and depending on the system config this may or may not be a issue  i personally suspect not as long as your primary video display card is under 120 watts

the z820/840 systems use a "multirail" power supply instead of a single rail design, due to this you have a fixed limit on each rail

HP allowed up to 2 k20 cards in a z820 if specific conditions were met (like the upgraded pwr supply) the k20 draws 225 watts so two of them = 450 watts

this information is found in the HP z820 quickspecs
