Question regarding Memory Rank

I want to upgrade my workstation Ram. everything is perfect  DDR 3 8GB 1Rx4 PC3 14900R . But I need to do upgrade up to 16 to 32 GB. Everythihng correctly Matching PC PC3 14900R DD3 . Only Rank is not matching which is 1Rx4 . So what will be the solution. Why rank do not matching? I believe the reason is its 16 GB . dual rank. so please advice it. Can I use Single 16GB or 16x2 32 GB Ram?

the z820 can work with memory of diffrent ranks,

however all memory in each bank must be the same size/speed/rank/capacity

Thanks for the link. most time I try to download it from HP side. But its not working.

another issue My installed ram is  1RX4 . Hp suppport suggest me to Buy 1GX4 . is that work? infact if I put my parts number then I see suggestion from HP site too.

In your reference there is nothing called rank word. But yea all other always mention what I see in manual too.

for the last time,.......dimm rank is not a issue

AS LONG AS ALL MODULES IN A BANK ARE THE SAME RANK/SPEED/CAPACITY/SIZE the z820 will not have a problem

in other words

bank one can have dims that are 2 rank installed  (all dimms in the bank must also match in capacity/speed)

bank two can have 4 rank dimms installed  (all dimms in the bank must also match in capacity/speed)

bank 3 can have 1 rank dimms installed  (all dimms in the bank must also match in capacity/speed)

bank 4 can have 4 rank dimms installed

Looks like my idea is right. But what do you mean by RAM bank?

is rank bank mean per challenge. or per group of slot? Hp z820 sample installed I see and understand correctly. that indicate as ram rank need to be same.

But I also see something else. in the diagram. If I installed 8 GB in Slot 1 . then need to install another slot 8 .

Everything match expect rank. DDR3 Speed/capacity/RDIMM etc

last I found something when I search using my parts number. I see Hp parts only mention 1Gx4 or 1Rx4 . even 16 GB. Not 2RX4

Bank will help me to know the answer almost close. a Ram specialist saied. you can not mix together. But similar ram you can install

look at the side cover of your z820 note the picture showing the ram slots

now refer to the link i gave you showing you the correct way to fill the slots when using  2gb modules in all 4 slots

this installs the same ram size in all 4  

read the document!!! note the section

Total of 16 memory sockets

• 8 memory sockets available per CPU

• 4 channels per processor and 2 sockets per channel

in other words  2 memory sockets = 1 bank

hp only tests/recomends HP ram, why is this suprising to you?

do you really think they are going to recomend a competiors product/ram?
