Hello everyone.

I have a Z420 (E5-2680 V2 processor) workstation. I have bought a Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card and was trying to use it in the workstation. However, after connecting it and powered on the system, i got red led with 4 beeps + delay + 4 beeps .....

According to the manual this is PSU overload issue.

This Z420 has only one 6-pin connector in the 600W PSU (V1 Z420 had two 6-pin connectors!). The RX 5700 XT requires 2 8-pin connectors. So i used a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter and molex 4 to 8-pin adapter to connect the graphics card. I have no other graphics card installed and only one ssd installed. Nothing more. So power-wise i should be Ok to power this gfx in the z420 as the processor has a 115W TDP and there is not much power withdrawn anywere else.

 

I hope someone can help me with this setup. 

The connectors i have are supposedly good quality - from Newegg.

one thing i noticed is that the molex to 8-pin uses only two pins to connect to the molex (which has 4 pins).

 

I have also tested the graphics card with in Z820 i have with 1125 PSU with two 6-pin to 8-pin adapters. The graphics card powers in ok although it takes long time to get to POST. Not sure if this card is recommended for the Zx20 series workstations.

There is still one possible cheaper option to get your RX 5700 xt GPU running with your current HP Z420 PSU. 

 

I have re-configured my HP Z620 many times over the years that I have owned it.  At one stage I had a Quadro K4200 GPU card (108W) and a Tesla M2090 Compute card (225W) installed at the same time. The K4200 card required a 6-pin PCIe auxiliary power cable and the Tesla card required a 6-pin and 8-pin auxiliary PCIe auxiliary power cables. However, the HP Z620 has only got 2 off, 6-pin auxiliary power cables. To get around this limitation, I used one of the Z620 auxiliary PCIe cables to power the K4200 card and used a 6-pin to dual 8-pin adapter cable on the other auxiliary PCIe cable to power the Tesla card.

Based on the HP Z420 PSU specification, G1 is rated at 12v and up to 18A which equates to 216W available power. Since the PCIe slot on the Z420 motherboard provides 75W of power, you only need to supply an additional 150W of power from the G1 cable. Before replacing your HP Z420 PSU I would give the adapter cable a try - better to spend £3 on a cable rather than £100 for a PSU.

According to page 9 in the above document, the HP Z420 supports the Quadro K6000 card which is also a 225W GPU card, i.e. the same as your RX 5700 xt GPU card so your GPU card should work. However, there are some requirements as stated in the GPU notes; e.g.

 

NOTE 3:Configuration requires the Z4 Fan and Front Card Guide Kit, which is available both CTO (QE150AV) and AMO (A2Z46AA).

NOTE 4: Supported on 600W PSU chassis only.

 

Please confirm that you have the front fan assembly installed in your system and verify that you actually have the 600W PSU installed and not the 400W PSU option. Your current BIOS error (i.e. red lights & beeps) are indicating the PSU is overloaded.

I have verified both  the PSU and the Z4 fan. The PSU is 600W with 623193-001 P/N and the front fan is installed and running.

Just Wondering, The K6000 requires 2 6-pin connectors. How it is wired as it ships by HP as my psu has only one 6-pin connector. Is there a different PSU option?. I have seen ebay they are selling Z420 PSUs with 2 6-pin connectors. How?

 

EDIT: (Possibly they are selling the PSUs that came with the V1 Z420).

I managed to find an image of the HP Z420 600W PSU on Amazon and it clearly shows 2off, 6-pin PCIe auxilliary power cables;

When HP supplies a pre-configured HP Z420 with a low power GPU, i.e. 75W or less, then the unused PCIe auxilliary power cables are attached to the rear of the GPU card guide. This prevents any cables rattling around during transportation and keeps the internal cable management tidy. Please re-check that you don't have a second auxillairy PCIe power cable attached to the rear of the GPU card guide or tucked away elsewhere in your Z420.

EDIT: Here's an image of the PSU label clearly indicating 2off PCIe auxilliary supplies labelled as G1 and G2;

Thanks Brian,

 

my PSU is same part number but Rev 06. It does say it has G1 and G2 connectors. However, i cannot find the G2 connector. Is it possible that G2 wires are left inside the PSU? or it has never been included?

 

This is a second hand machine and i dont know what happened to it before. 

Is it possible to dismantle the PSU and try and find the G2 connector if it is inside or install a G2 connector cable. I can find an used one from another machine and use it here.

Personally, I would be looking at removing the PSU and place it on a table then check the cables exiting the PSU to see if you can locate the mysterious missing 2nd PCIe auxiliary power connector (G2). If your PSU does not have a second PCIe auxiliary power cable then I think your only option would be to replace the HP Z420 PSU with one that has 2 off auxiliary PCIe power cables.

 

It is very strange that your PSU label indicates the presence of the G2 cable but one is not present? I assume you have checked the cable hasn't been stored on the rear of the PSU, i.e. cable tied up?

Hi again,

 

I have removed the PUS and put it on the table. Still one 6-pin connector. 

 

I have also dismantled it and there is no way to add a second 6-pin connector. I thought there will be a board with female connectors that i can plug in a cable into it. It was a shock how these things are attached to the PSU. 

 

Anyway, I notice that the label including the 600W and G1 G2 details is on the cover of the PSU. So it is possible this is a 400W psu and someone has just replaced the cover with the one for 600W. So forget it.

 

I now need to figure out if i can just use it in the Z820 or order a 600W psu with 2 6-pins.

i believe the z420 uses the same design power supply as the z620/820 systems which are multi rail supplies instead of the single rail designs found on most new consumer power supplies

 

early z420 600 watt supplies DID have 2 6 pin GPU connectors, but hp changed the supply to one that only has one in later systems and supplied a high quality dual 6 pin adapter where required

 

due to this it's possible to overload a single rail (GPU in your case) while being under the max wattage on the others

 

even though the z420 uses a non standard supply of 400 watt and a optional 600 watt unit (18 pins) there are adapters to convert it to a standard 24pin ATX supply

if you go this route, a name brand QUALITY supply is required DO NOT USE THOSE CHEAP 600 watt $15/1000 watt $50 supplies!!

Just wondering when i installed it in the Z820, the first time i started, no video came out even after waiting for like 5 minutes.  it then took a few minutes to get to POST. On HDMI rather and never been able to get any video in the the displayport.

 

Any ideas?
