I should have mentioned I don't have the original power cable as I'm using this board in another case so the only thing important to me is the temp sensor connection.

As for the transistor I have seen there are various different part numbers so all good with that. I just ordered a few of eBay for a couple dollars.

Thank you

Interesting enough I opened up an old lenovo temp sensor and it also uses a npn transistor but with the C and B shorted together, therefore making a diode between that junction and E. I will connect this to the relevant P and N pins on the header and try it when I build my machine.

that is correct, collector and base need to be shorted to correctly bias the transistor as a simple diode the 1k resistor is not required either as it's allready on the motherboard

So from this, I take it the C&B junction will be the anode going to the P connection (pin 11) and the E will be the cathode going to the N connection (pin 12).

Cheers,

Hello I solved this problem on my HP z420. so you need to get 2n3904 transistor. you should solder base and collector togeather. so you will be left with 2 wires first is emitter second is Base+Collector. so you take Emitter and join pin 12 (ambient sensor DN) and the rest on 11 (Ambient Sensor DP) and it works 🙂 2n3904b.jpg
