HP Z2 Tower G4 Workstation

After trying all HP recommended checks I have not succeeded to repair the problem. I also read the 5 or six previous posts.

Referiing to the Manual Diagrams on next post:

UPDATE

For the "Z2 TOWER G4 WORKSTATION"   items #4 & #7 are a combined USB module fitted on the standard UK version.. The issue is #4 is totally dead. #7 in OK.   I am guessing than my BIOS Fault Code that I passed back to HP clearly identifies #4 as the issue.  I am expecting the identical twin USB  module with one common cable connector, I already checked this connectoin cable routing and plug/socket  security before as part of several HP recommendations before contacting HP for a warranty replacement.

Item #6 is a USB C Port and is not fitted on the standard version and is not an issue for me.

Barry,

Please just reply to yourself so you end up with a single unified thread when you want to expand on your initial post. You've been making multiple new posts instead.

This may be related:  We have a few of Z440 and Z640 workstations with the "charging" high power top front USB3 port not working. See Z440 front picture below. All other USB3 and USB2 ports work fine on those. I bought several of eBay-sourced front modules that include the front USB ports and power button, tried those, and even took one of those modules out of a known-good workstation, tried it (it also did not work), and put it back in its original workstation where it worked fine.

I then realized that it is a motherboard issue, not an actual front USB3 port issue. Rather than buy a new motherboard I just covered the top USB3 charging port and accepted that will never work without a new motherboard install. Not worth it for sure.

My guess is that the circuit for the extra power to only that charging USB port got shorted out somehow, and there is no fuse to replace anywhere I could find. There is a specific electrical symbol by that port that indicates its extra capability, same as on your Z2 Tower G4... it looks like you could order one or two of those modules as an option. I suppose HP might have re-engineered the modules to include an integrated fuse out front so it might be worth tracking down one of those if in fact your bad port is of that type.

UPDATE: The QuickSpecs and the manual are a bit confusing about whether there is one or two front optional USB ports. From an early QuickSpecs:  "Front: 1 USB-A 3.0, 1 USB-A 3.0 Charging Data Port and 1 USB-C 3.1 Gen2 Charging Data Port (Optional)."    So, your front USB-A charging and data port may not be part of a removable module. There is a specific optional USB-C data/charging power "flexport" module you can personally add in up front if you don't have one already, according to a HP rep:  "Part 4KY85AA is for the HP Z2 Small Form Factor G4 Workstation and HP Z2 Tower G4 Workstation."

Note: before I would try that I'd want to check with the seller if there is a special cable to get too, or whether it is just a plug and play module. Some build to order options are only available if done at the factory, and others are owner-installable. I like the B&H source, and they have a place in their page for this item that allows asking questions. It sure looks like there is a 5-pin white rear facing cable port built into the module on the B&H web picture from their ad:

Yes, I had a big disaster trying to navigate HP support portals. I eventually got into my bootup BIOS and was able to confirm the fault and fault ID. I then started telephoning. Eventually I got thru to a very helpful repair technician and HP have logged my BIOS fault ID.   I have a new twin FUSB module being posted out to me today for a self-fit.  By the way, my failed FUSB  is not the 'Sleep and Charge' port. It is the standard port. So I think motherboard is not an issue.

I have another 2 weeks of my HP warranty still to run, so if the replacement module does not fix it perhaps I am automatically inline for a new motherboard,  as you highlighted.  If the new module is a full fix,  I will endevour to test the old module to find a reason for it's failure and report back. I am guessing this issue is common and the new modules will be improved.

I am guessing HP original USB port specification became an issue when connecting mobile phone devices to the low power FSUiB. There has been many changes to phone current algorithms in recent years.
