HP Recommended

there are a few dozen HP branded ink cartridges for the dozens of different printers that HP makes.  Why does HP make so many products that do the same thing?  Is it jjust to take up shelf space so that no matter which one I choose it will be an HP?  Don't each of these printers and friends require seperate pieces that engineered, tested, manufactered, etc.  It seems like they could reduce costs b reducing sku's.  What am I missing?
