I have a z820 with an rtx 3080 installed and it works great. I am considering selling the 3080 and installing an rtx 3090. Has anyone successfully done this? Does it physically fit?

so you currently have a mismatched cpu/gpu setup and wish to run a extremely mismatched CPU/GPU setup
my question is why? the 3090 will not perform any faster due to the z820's cpu bottleneck,.. your current 3080 is already not performing at it's full capacity in some scenarios on the z820
even the latest gen cpu's from amd/intel on a current motherboard struggle to keep up with a 3090

I would use it in z820 for a bit and then transfer it over to a newer machine later. I just want to know if anyone has actually fitted one?
3080 benchmarks ok in the z820 and runs pretty well.
can run Microsoft flight sim at 4K ultra, but I am interested to try 8k too.

the max wattage on a z820 gpu with the optional 1120 watt supply can be found in the HP z820 service manual
the 3090 draws about 370 watts vs the 3080's (non TI) 320 watts depending on the z820 current config this may exceed the allowed power requirements

Thanks for info. 3090 is near the power limit then. Seems a tight fit based on physical dimensions too.
Have CPU’s really got much quicker recently? Clock speeds have been stuck years haven’t they so they just add cores.
2x water cooled processors in mine are really useless now?

the 3090 will fit a z820 without any issues, (other than using one more pci-e slot)
as to performance between the z820 E5-26xx v2 line and a current ryzen 7 or threadripper i recommend you google, the results on a per core comparison are rather drastic in that the current amd cpu's are much much faster
amd ryzen 7 5800x vs intel e5-2980 is aprox 80% faster across the board, and depending on the run software applications, a threadripper can be a magnitude faster than a ryzen 7 5800x cpu

There are 707, HP z820 tested on Passmark Performance Test. Of the 707 tested, there are 0 listings for RTX 3080 or RTX 3090. The top 10, 3D scores are 5X GTX 1080 , 3X Quadro P4000, and 1X RTX 2070 Super. The CPU's of the top 10 rated by 3D scores are 5X Xeon E5-2687W v2, 2X E5-2690 v2, 2X E5-2687W, and 2X E5-2690. These CPU's are logical for better 3D scores as they have among the highest Turbo clock speeds of any Xeon E5 of between 3.8 to 4.0Ghz. The top z820 3D score is 10156 on a 2X Xeon E5-2687W v2 / GTX 1080 / Samsung 950 PRO 512GB NVMe system.
For comparison, in z420_3, with the Xeon E5-1650 v2 overclocked to 4.6GHz, the 3D score from a GTX 1060 6GB = 11216; higher than a z820 / 2X Xeon E5-2687W v2 / GTX 1080 / Samsung 950 PRO NVMe system .
If the RTX 3080 is working properly in the z820 and there are sufficient CUDA cores and memory capacities for the current uses, consider that upgrading to 3090, besides the difficult physical dimensions of most of those designs, will not produce a noticeable performance improvement at an enormous cost given the current shortage.
_Consider waiting until the successor system is underway- and one that has at least a 4.5GHz processor and when GPU prices return to normal. Paying $1,800- $2,200 for an $800 GPU without a benefit is not productive.
