Just upgrade all

first of all 256 GB ram is not worthwhile on the z820 as the cost is to great buy a z840 or newer workstation if you absolutly require this amount of ram

the largest module the z820 takes is a 16GB Load Reduced module from crucial and you need dual cpu's and the optional 1125 watt power supply to use all 16 ram slots

DDR3L RDIMM 16GB 2Rx4 1600 CL11

DDR3L-1600MT/s • 16GB Module Capacity • RDIMM • 2 Rank x 4 • PC3-12800 • CL=11 • 1.35V • ECC •

Zlive,

When considering upgrading, the best results will derive from starting with:

1.  What are the principal uses? The best hardware for video editing is different from 3D CAD, development,  or server uses.

2. What is the performance deficit? What should be faster?

3. Is this used professionally?

4. What is the current specification? CPU, RAM, GPU, drives etc?

5. What is the budget?

6. When is the current system likely to be replaced?

When stating; "Just upgrade all", does that literally mean, potentially replace the CPU(s), RAM, GPU, drives etc- anything that improve performance?

In my view, z820 can be completely useful at a good level in 2021 and beyond. Given the outrageous prices and unavailability of new hardware, worth upgrading- up to the appropriate point.

There are by the way, 28, z820's on Passmark of the 705 tested using 256GB of RAM- almost 4%.

I recommend downloading, installing and running the 30-day free trial of Passmark Performance Test and along with the list of the hardware in the subject report the test results which can reveal the weak hardware or problems.

Consider a format like this:

HP z620_2 (2017) (R7) > Xeon E5-1680 v2 (8C@ 4.3GHz) / z420 Liquid Cooling / 64GB (HP/Samsung 8X 8GB DDR3-1866 ECC registered) / Quadro P2000 5GB _ GTX 1070 Ti 8GB / HP Z Turbo Drive M.2 256GB AHCI + Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe 500GB + HGST 7K6000 4TB + HP/HGST Enterprise 6TB / Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 sound interface + 2X Mackie MR824 / 825W PSU / Windows 7 Prof.’l 64-bit (HP OEM) > 2X Dell Ultrasharp U2715H (2560 X 1440)

[ Passmark Rating = 6280 / CPU rating = 17178 / 2D = 819 / 3D= 12629 / Mem = 3002 / Disk = 13751 / Single Thread Mark = 2368 [10.23.18]
