HP Z2 Tower G4 Base Model Workstation
Microsoft Windows 11

Long story short, I need assistance in finding the correct hardware to place a fan in the front of my Z2 G4 workstation (2YW27AV). Read below for more details and an extensive rant if you are interested. But the basic thing is that I updated my graphics card and I'm now getting a "Fan not found" error. I need to know if this is the correct part number to add a front fan for my workstation:  L37979-001. There is nothing at all in that area in my computer. Do I need any other component? A video I watched showed a large black plastic card guide in that area. Do I need that as well as the part referenced above? Any help to figure this all out would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

-=-=-=-

I've long wanted to upgrade my graphics card for my workstation, and decided to do so after a lot of research into which card I could afford that would work in my machine. I'm a graphic designer working from home, not a tech guru or IT specialist. But I found what I could to the best of my ability. I even contacted HP before I ordered the card and they confirmed it would work.

I successfully installed it and it seems to be working fine. Except that now every time the workstation boots I hear a very loud beep and a "901-Chassis Fan Not Detected (Front)" error. So I started researching that, and contacted HP support. After way too long in getting a useful answer from support, I was finally told today that I need a fan and front card guide kit. Why was I not told that when I called HP to confirm if the graphics card would work? You obviously have the specs of my machine, right? You know I don't have a front fan, right? And for that matter, why did my workstation never have the hardware for a front fan to begin with?

Anyway, he told me the part number for it is L37979-001 and to search for it on HP's parts store here: https://parts.hp.com/  Except that site couldn't find it. So he told me to call HP sales. They couldn't find it. But the sales rep said I could send an email(!!) to hpparts.rma.ams@hp.com to request the part.

I just got a reply from that email address. I learned that (a) I will need to send money to Costa Rica, (b) they only have the fan, not the whole unit, and (c) it would cost significantly more than anywhere else I could find the entire kit with a simple Google search.

What the hell, HP? First I wasn't told that I'd need the kit when I talked to HP about the graphics card. Then I spent way too long trying to explain to multiple techs what my problem is. They even had me update my BIOS. Oh, and they somehow thought I had a Z2 G4 small form computer instead of the Z2 G4 tower workstation. So that took way too long to sort out. Then to have the HP parts store website not have it? And HP sales couldn't find it? And to be given an email to buy the part? (Really? It's the 21st century, HP.) And have the part cost almost twice as much? What the hell???

I'm furious with HP's horrible "customer service". Great hardware, I'll agree. But this is just pure incompetence.

He told you what to get... that is the HP "option" part number for the correct whole kit.

For years now these front lower case cooling fan "kits" have been comprised of a HP-selected correct fan and the correct custom fitting black plastic PCI card guide/fan mount cage. Up at the front lower part of the motherboard will be a fan header to plug that fan into, currently unused in your situation. Everyone in the forum will now know this is what to get. I'd advise putting one in any of these workstations at the low price noted below whether it demands it or not. They are quiet and cool your case better over the long haul.

Look at THIS eBay ad for exactly what you need. It is a HP kit with correct fan and fan mount cage. 20.00 USD. This is exactly what I'd buy if I was you, especially at that low price for the whole kit.

EDIT: That fan measures 92x25 mm, and from the ad you can see the HP part number on the fan's label. You need more than just the fan... that black cage it snaps into is key. Those cages have tabs at the bottom to fit into holes already built into the case, and then you rotate the cage up to lock into position. It can be a tight fit... work carefully. Plug the fan in as your last step. Computer fans always blow towards their label, and you want this fan to blow into the case. Face the label towards the rear of the case when you snap it into the cage (facing towards the PCIe card guide slots).

Note that on the fan's label there is the main Foxconn part number and also the HP part number. Note the small added "modifier" alphanumeric by the Foxconn number... those detail the fan wire length and plug type for your kit's needs. That same Foxconn fan might be used elsewhere, with different length and types of wires and plug ends. There also usually is a cage part number embossed into the black plastic of the cage. You can't do better than getting a whole brand-new kit because everything will be correct that way.

Regarding the YouTube video... that is for a Z4 G4... the concepts will be the same but the space will be a bit smaller to work in.

for those that don't want to search for the parts separately here's the complete kit you need

HP Z2 G4 Tower Front Card Guide and Fan Kit, part# 4KY82AA

Edit: seems everyone is out of stock at the moment, you can thank covid, and the general supply issues facing all mfgr's/resellers currently for the not in stock issues

here's a ebay used fan/bracket for 20.00

here's a link showing the parts of the kit

last, when you bought the system did you order a upgraded video card with it?..no? then why pay for what was not needed at the time

many systems are happily working without a performance video card installed and they get a bit of savings on the price of the system

just because you now want a upgraded video  card is no reason to knock hp because you also have to install a optional part to make the optional video card work reliably

Thank you for your reply. And thank you for the links. Would this be all I need, then? I watched this video and it showed a large component that seems to be needed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxhbqOwPsGY It is possible I may be misjudging the size of the fan and that the component in the video is the housing. Photos I've seen so far seem to show it as only a few inches across. I've not been able to find an answer to this and so I'd really appreciate your help.

As for your other comment: fair point. But that is only one of many complaints. Discount that one and I still have a host of others.

Which boils down to the poor assumption on HP's part that anyone who buys a workstation has an IT department or is assumed to be a computer expert. HP has advertised these workstations to designers and artists, such as myself, with no technical knowledge (https://www.hp.com/us-en/workstations/industries/creative-pros.html). If they are going to sell workstations to artists with no technical knowledge, they should have the ability to support artists with no technical knowledge. Thus my complaint.

That said, I do very much appreciate your help.

One more question, if you don't mind. I've found a few 2nd party sites that do have the kit. But they are for the Z4 G4 workstation. Would this also work for the Z2?

SDH, thank you very much for your reply! This is exactly the information I needed. You made my day. 😊

The Amazon link DGroves gave in good faith above is for a different workstation, the Z4 G4. The kit for that won't fit for you. Here is a translation of the single Amazon review for that listed item (it is described incorrectly by the seller on Amazon):

"1.0 out of 5 stars Incorrect product

Reviewed in Italy on February 5, 2021

The accessory is for an HP Z4 Workstation, not Z2!!!"

HP provides an option part number of 1XM33AA for that Z4 G4 product, shown at B&HPhoto HERE. Don't buy that one.

You want the Z2 G4 item, and here is the shipping label for the correct product from that eBay I linked to:

Z2 G4 proper kit is 4KY82AA.jpg

Thank you! I had noticed all of the results from my Google searching was returning parts for the Z4. I was beginning to wonder if I could find the part.

I followed your advice and purchased the one from your Ebay link. Thanks again for your post!

Happy to help. The HP parts names and part system can get confusing, but we have it correct now for the future. My advice for someone buying a new workstation from HP is to always add the front cooling fan kit as an option so you have it there from day one.

SDH,

I'm sorry I need to ask, but the ebay seller you linked to has been frustrating in the extreme to work with. I won't go into the details, but he has sent me the wrong part, and initially the fan was missing. Among other things.

Do you know of any other place to find this kit? I've searched myself and am coming up with "not in stock" or "backordered" everywhere I look. Sorry to drag you back into my mess.  : )
