Z400 memory?

HP Recommended
Z400
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello Z400 users and HP professional team!

Currently I use HP 2GB memory x 3 = 6GB on Z400. Specification in detail:  Xeon CPU W3520 @2.67GHz, Windows 10 pro version 1803, build 17134.254.

My Z400 has 6 slots.

(as seen in official pdf from HP:  http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/downloads/HP-Z400-Workstation-memory-configuration-and-optimization....)

Then I bought 6 pieces of " Transcend PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 4GB 1.5V 240pin ECC DIMM TS512MLK72V3N ".

I believe this Transcend memory has ECC and unbuffered.

However, when I installed 6 pieces into my Z400, I could not launch Windows 10 at all.  It stopped at black screen.

Changed to current HP2GBx3=6GB, then it works without any trouble.

" Transcend PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 4GB 1.5V 240pin ECC DIMM TS512MLK72V3N " is bad choice for Z400???

Or if you guys know good memory choices, please let me know.

Thank you in advance!

Regards,

you gave all information EXCEPT for your current memory part number

the trancend memory will work, however it's a 2rank by 8 part, is your current memory the same rank?

Hello DHroves. Thank you so much for your quick answers.
My current memory part number is, as shown on the memory surface print:

HP Samsong 2GB 2Rx8 PC3 -10600E - 09 - 10 - E1 M391B5673EH1 - CH9 0949

And I understand you said that transcend memory works. But I don’t understand what “a 2 rank by 8 part” means. And I don’t know how I know the rank of my current memory.
Please forgive me to reply with these newbie’s knowledge.

think of "rank" like the memory banks on a computer. your listed HP memory is a 2x8 rank module, same as your transend modules that you bought

so if a memory module has 2 Ranks, it's sort of like having two banks of ram and if a module has 4 ranks then it has 4 banks.

you can not mix ranks within a computers memory bank, each bank must be the same, most common intel systems have either 2 or 4 memory banks and as such are filled in groups of 2 or 4 modules at a time

other intel systems (like the x79 chipset) used a 3 chanel mem controller, and each bank was filled with 1, 3,6,9 sticks at a time

read the HP link i provided, it will cover the proper number of modules per bank and in what order to fill each memory slot
