Z600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I know there has been multiple historic threads regarding CPU upgrades on the Z600 but my situation is a strange one.

My system was shiped with 2 x X5550 with the earlier 01/30/09 Boot Block Date which limits upgrades with X55xx CPUs only.

However when fitted with 2 x X5570 the system refuses to boot even the BIOS. But everything works perfectly with the X5550 refitted.

Why will the system not boot the X5570s? I have installed the latest BIOS 3.61.

Also - old threads suggest that these Z600 can not bot from M2 SSD on PCIe cards - is this still the case ?

Kind Regards

1,  Should work because the X5570 is listed in the early QuickSpecs (for the version 1 Z600) as an approved 95W max TDP processor just like your X5550 is.  I'd try to boot with one and see if you have one good and one bad.  When you use one put it in the CPU0 socket, not CPU1.

2.  I've posted in here on the one M.2 card in its PCIe slot adapter that works..... the Kingston Predator, running on one very specific storage controller driver.  It is not easy but can be done.  Those can be found at times used off eBay.  That provides a small but noticable benefit.

Look for the 240 or 480 GB size.  The cost and trouble will be worth it to some.  My advice however is to get a Z420 or Z620 version 2 and to use a SATA III roughly 500GB drive, like the latest Intel 545s or latest Samsung.  The ZX00 workstations are SATA II.

Here's an example:
