Hp z820
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought a Hp z820 with 2x e5-2667 v2 processors and I want to install radeon vega 64.

The PSU is 1125 W.

I connected the gpu in the firs PCie slot with 1 molex ( 2x4 pin) to 8 pin  and a 6pin to 8 pin cables.

The LED on the GPU are working but the fans are not and it does not send signel to the monitor.

I have tryed to update the Bios, tried to change from legacy to Efi and still no results.

I also have tried to conect the GPU with a 1x6 pin to 2x 8 pin cable.

Already have read all the forums but there is not much on the internet about this combination.

Please help a desperate man in need.

Or I will set the workstation on fire :)))

P.S. when I try to turn it on it gives me the 6 beep code error.

Vike_plikea,

First, consider trying a lower power GPU in the z820.  If it works, there are two possibilities:

1.  The Vega 64 is defective. Has that GPU worked in another system?

The Vega 64 does use a lot of power- up to 295W, and it's possible that the Molex 4-pin is the weak link- I think it's limited to 132W.  However, the z820 should have two 6-pin connectors. As HP provides more than than the minimum spec through a 6-pin, consider trying 2X 6-pin to 2X 8-pin.  It may not be the problem, but that will at least eliminate power as the problem.

If the lower power GPU does not work, a BIOS problem is a possibility.

Let us know what happens.

Hi, at the moment I am using a GT 710 and it's working.

Unfortunatelly I don't have another PC to test the GPU if it is working.

I have changed in BIOs settings to EFI and updated it already.

The video card that I bought is a red devil powercolor.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-VEGA64-POWERCOLOR-Red-Devil-8GB-HBM2-2x-HDMI-2x-DP-NEU-BULK/323665571...

The first conection that I have used was a 1x 6 pin to 2x 8 pin then I thought it does not have enough power.

https://www.emag.ro/cablu-pci-express-6-pini-la-2-x-8-pini-m-t-delock-83433/pd/D3R4YMBBM/

The cable alowes to use 6 pins and 2 separately (look at the images in the link above) so I tryed to conect 2x 6 pins conections from the PC directly and the 2 x 2 pins from the cable that I bought, that means that I have used all 3x 6 pins cables from the PC, 2 directly to the video card and 1 via the adapter to fill al the holes of the GPU  (I know it sound crazy but I wanted to give it a try  ).

After that I bought another cable 2x4 pins to 1x8 pins.

https://www.emag.ro/cablu-alimentare-pci-express-8-pini-delock-82397/pd/DQQ4YMBBM/

So I connected this new cable and the second 8 pin I have connected with the previous cable.

Somebody told me to try a 1x6 pins to 1x 8 pins directly so I already ordered 2 of them.

https://www.emag.ro/cablu-active-adaptor-alimentare-placa-video-pci-e-6-pini-mama-la-8-pini-tata-ext...

And just in case another cable:

https://www.emag.ro/adaptor-alimentare-placa-video-pci-e-8-pini-6-2-de-la-1-x-sata-20cm-tzz71223661/...

Should I return this video card and buy one with just one cooler that requires less power?

Vike_plikea,

If the GT 710 is working in the z820, it seems very probable that the power connections are the problem.

The z820 should have two 6-pin PCIe power connectors and I believe the best solution is to try the two of the 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe power connectors. I think you already have one:

https://www.emag.ro/cablu-active-adaptor-alimentare-placa-video-pci-e-6-pini-mama-la-8-pini-tata-ext...

If the GPU still does not work with the new connetion, consider trying it in another system or if that is not practical, return it.

The AMD GPU's are very good but typically use quite a lot of power.  Also, I think the Vega 64 is the top power user, the same or more than the new Radeon VII with 16GB of memory.

I have already ordered new adapters like the ones you showed me and I hope it will work.

I will be back in a couple of days with the result.

Thank you for helping.

i can confirm that dual 6->8 pin adapter works flawless but beware that there are bad 6->8 adapter
