e5-46xx in a Z820? Will it work?

HP Recommended
Z820
Linux

(Cross-posting from Desktop/Hardware...meant to post it in workstations.)

Will a pair of e5-4650s work in a Z820?  The e5-46XXs are for quad socket servers, but the Z820 is dual socket.

The 820 quick specs doc actually mentions the e5-46xx line but doesn't say whether it is compatiable.  It also mentions the 16xx series, but doesn't state compatibility.  The service manual doesn't list the e5-46xx as compatible, so so I'm wondering if anyone has tried it.

HP posts all of the currently supported cpu's in their z820 "quickspecs"

if a cpu is not listed then HP does not support it, note that the older hp quickspec revisions do not list the v2 xeons this is because the original HP z820 motherboards did not support the v2 xeons, hp released a new motherboard revision (1.03) that has a updated intel chipset which supports the v2 xeons (search this board for details on z820 rev 1 rev 2 boards/bios)

in theory you can run the 16xx and 46xx systems on the z820 chipset

(i believe the 16xx cpu's do have some positive replys running on the z820 posted in this forum)

keep in mind that the 16xx v2 xeons are single cpu only, they lack the dual QPI links of the dual cpu/quad cpu lines

same for the 46xx,... it should work, but this depends on if the z820 bios has the nessary microcode support for the specific 46xx cpu you install
