z640

I have a z640  and it has the pins but there is no fan baffle like it's predecessor . Can someone tell me whether it should have a fan baffle?

thanks

Remember that the Z640 has fewer memory sockets on the mainboard than the Z440.  Perhaps added memory cooling is not needed in the Z640.  The cooler appears to have been made primarily  for the Z440, but why not fit it in also for the Z640?  The fan plug-in socket for that device is already built into the Z640 motherboard just like it is for the Z440 motherboard.

One can look up the "HP Z440 Memory Cooling Solution" (option part number J2R52AA) having part number 748799-001.  Some eBay and Amazon sellers present it as fitting both the Z440 and the Z640 but I've never seen one in place in a Z640.

You can search on eBay for a lowest price one, buy it for about $35.00 USD, and let us know.  Here is what HP says about the memory cooler in the Z440:  "The J2R52AA Z440 Memory Cooling Solution from HP improves system cooling on the HP Z440 Workstation.  It ensures proper memory cooling on any HP Z440 configuration with greater than four memory DIMMs installed."  Here's a couple of pics, and note that the front/rear metal frame attachment points would have to be present in the Z640 for the Z440 memory cooler to fit.  Also, the prior Z620 memory cooler does not fit because its clip-on sites are both upwards facing.

OK, here is the final post on this issue from me... finally figured it out.

I have access to a variety of Z440 and Z640 workstations.  And Z420 and Z620 ones, and on and on.

Looking closely at the Z640 workstations they were in fact built to accept a custom Z640 memory cooling "saddle" given the metal work done on the inside of the case both beneath the power supply and projecting from the area by the optical drives and the drive drawers towards the front.  A memory cooler to fit in those slots for the Z640 was never released, however.

The memory cooler saddle that fits in the Z620 won't fit in the Z640... I tried.  The one that fits in the Z440 won't fit securely... it only attaches at the power receptacle... I tried, and it is too short to attach at either its front or back.  There is potential to MacGyver that in, however, for a person wanting to use the large Z640/Z440 single processor heatsink/fan under it (perhaps for air cooling of an overclocked Z640).

An active memory cooler appears to not be needed for the regular Z640... it only has two sockets for the front memory bank and two for the rear bank on the main motherboard.  The other two for each bank are shifted up into the Z640 second processor riser.  For the Z440, instead, there are 4 front and 4 rear memory sockets on the motherboard and it definitely would benefit from adding memory cooling in advanced (or overclocked) builds, as HP did by providing the special memory cooler for it.

If you're running only one processor in a Z640 my best advice is to get that big Z440/Z640 processor cooler and be happy with it for overclocking.  That bigger cooler won't fit in your Z640 if you're running two processors with the second processor riser.
