HP Recommended

I need to install a 3tb internal drive in a z400.  Does anyone know if it can handle it or will I need any updates, drivers, etc.?

whbc, are you installing a second drive that will be used for data only?  If so, there should be no problems - just plug it in and initialize and format it in the operating system.  No other updates or drivers are needed. 

If you are using it as a boot drive, there are some limitations.  The Z400 cannot use boot drives greater than 2TB.  If you plug in the 3TB drive and try to make it the boot drive, it will show up as ~ 765MB instead of 3GB.  The drive could be partitioned beforehand into 2 drives, where each partition is less than 2GB, then one is used for the operating system and one for data.

There's no reason you can't install any kind of compatible SATA drive in a Z400, as it can handle up to four physical drives(SATA or SAS), according to the documentation. If you're not going to configure a RAID array, it's pretty much a case of add the new drive, boot up and Windows should recognize it without any trouble.
