8 of 16 ram slots are filled. Fault is intermittent. I thought it may be a dicky fan in the m/b fan array cartridge (and wondering how to diagnose for that specific issue), but, looking around, the machine may require a "HP Memory Cooling Kit"?

* Consistent POST Error - 517 Memory configuration requires a Memory fan and this fan is not detected

the main cooling shroud for the z820/840 contains the cpu fans, and the memory fans

all fans are removable from the shroud and simply pop out by removing the fans plastic holding tabs

you can then remove the fans 4 pin power lead from the shrouds fan connection headers

for your issue simply note the memory fans part number printed on the fan label and order a replacement

you can id which fan by using aida64 or the HP Perf Advisor (Workstations)
