HP Prime Virtual Calculator missing mfc120u.dll error since upgrade to version 1.21.8151.102

HP Recommended

The HP Prime virtual calculator will not start since the most recent update (version 1.21.8151.102). A windows system error popup window comes up when attempting to start the virt calc saying "The program can't start because mfc120u.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Needless to say "re-installing" did not fix the problem. From searches it appears the specified DLL is associated with debug builds so wondering if the latest version was built incorrectly?? Anyone else having this problem? Any solution from HP? I have had to revert to my "shipped" version which is sub-optimal. There has been no problem so far with my actual HP Prime device since the latest firmware update so phew... but the virtual calc is handy when working on the PC with code.

I am running 64bit windows 7 -- all latest updates applied from MS etc. had no problems until this version of the vCalc

One possible scenario:

  • On installation, the 64 bit OS is recognised and the 64 bit version of the redistributable is installed.
  • The emulator is probably a 32 bit version (compatibility, 32 bit programs usually work on 64 bit systems but not vice versa).
  • It looks for the 32 bit version of the redistributable which isn't installed.

Note, this is one of many possibilities in todays software world. However, the fact that 32 bit programs require the 32 bit redistributable and 64 bit programs require the 64 bit redistributable is why I suggested to install both versions. This is not only useful for HP's emulators, but many other programs (hence I have so many installed already).

Best regards.

Hi,

This depends how HP compiled the project.

The quick fix is to download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. As you have a 64 bit OS, I suggest you install both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions.

Best regards.

Hi!, nzJamie:

I'm have HP PC120 All in One 1026la, with Operating System Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits and download and install in my HP PRIME Virtual Calculator, without problem. Too, i'm install the new Software (2015 6 17 - 8151) in my calculator, across the Connectivity kit. Both run OK.

You can comparise the site, for check if you have the correct software. Please, see ... ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime/

Thanks Make, but for security reasons I would never download a DLL from such a site. I think obtaining the redist library from Microsoft may solve the problem... just not sure which version HP used to build. I think this has confirmed that they somehow shipped a debug enabled version of the code without the required redist libraries.

Thanks again for your fast replies to my post.

Cheers,

Jamie

Thanks again Make (sorry no accent 😉 )... I was unaware of the FTP site, that is handy information. Thanks. Checked and I do have the latest version so not sure why you aren't having the problem unless you have the required c++ DLLs on your PC already (very possible). I am using a non-development PC for the virtual calc so definitly don't have the c++ libraries.

Thanks again Make.

Thanks BartdB, I just need to have a guess at which version (VS version not OS/arch version) to download. Will try a couple this weekend to see if it solves the problem.

Thanks heaps for the fast reply.

Cheers,

Jamie

Hi!, nzJamie:

To update all drivers and files what you need, you have to enable Windows Update, from Start; search ... All Programs ... you'll find it there. You can choose, to automatically actualize or, another option what you choose.

Hi,

I have Win7 64 bit OS and the following installed:

MVC++RedistInst.jpg

You can try by installing the most recent available full release version, 2013. The Visual Studio version should be fine.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784

As I said, I suggest you download and install both the x64 and x86 versions.

Best regards.
