HP50g Simultaneous Equation Solving

HP Recommended
HP 50g

I'm trying to simultaneously solve a set of equations with the HP 50g. However, all I can find online is how to do that in RPN mode, and I perfer algebraic mode. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,

If the equations are linear, then here's one easy way to do it in Algebraic mode:

  1. Press right-shift, let go of it, and then press 7 (NUM.SLV)
  2. Press 4 Enter (Solve lin sys...)
  3. Type all the coefficients as a matrix, e.g. [[1,2,3] [4,5,6] [7,8,9]], into the A box.
(Alternative: Press MTRW to use the MatrixWriter)
  4. Type all the constants as a vector, e.g. [23,34,56], into the B box.
(Alternative: Press MTRW to use the MatrixWriter)
  5. Press SOLVE.

There are other ways, but this way is pretty straightforward.

Disclaimer: I don't work for HP. I'm just another happy HP calculator user.

Thanks! But is there any way to do so for more than 3 variables?

Use the same method no matter what size system you have. Obviously you should have the same number of equations as variables. For N equations, the coefficient matrix will be N×N and the constant vector will contain N numbers. Your 50g will handle amazingly large systems. I just tried a 20×20 system using random coefficients and constants, and it found the solution in 4 seconds.

It is also possible to try to solve 2 or more non - linear equations, but you have to provide a guess for the solutions.

When the guess is too bad you will not get a solution.

The command is MSLV and is described  on page 7 -4 , 7 -5 of the User's Guide.

It is accessible via: red Shift - NUM.SLV - MSLV,

and you can view the "built - in" example by pressing:

TOOL - NXT - HELP -ENTER - ALPHA - M
