HP Recommended

I hate to get update notices that once accepted, end up taking so long I have to end up canceling the **bleep** thing!  Are these things really necessary for me or are they for HP's benefit (research and general spyware?) If it's legit it may end up messing up system, on the other hand I hate being held hostage by these insessant updates! ARGHGHHGGH
