after i post a question on the forum do i get notified by email when there is an answer or solution or do i have to go in and change some setting?

Yes, KNKR is right. As far as I know, there's an option to 'subscribe' to the posts, but when you create a topic, this option is already pre selected. So you can uncheck the box too (I know it's not what you want, just an option 🙂 ) and you can also subscribe to other posts. For example, you can search in the Forum to see if other people have the same issue you have, then subscribe to their posts to see the responses/solutions.
PS: see the screen capture below. When I reply to this topic, the option is pre selected 🙂

Forgot to mention the Notification Feed. It's something quite unusual in other Forums and I think HP is one step ahead to have this feature.
You'll find it at the Forums Home Page, and will display any action that happened in posts you are subscribed, or topics you created:
