HP Recommended
HP DesignJet 5500 Printer series

When connecting the hard disk (Q1251-60303) to the HP DesignJet 5500 printer, the error <You are running a RTL printer with a PS disk. Insert RTL disk and restart.>

How can I solve the problem without replacing the hard drive?

So question is, why not just get the correct hard drive?  At this point, it's probably the cheapest, safest and quickest way to get things going again.  I've had very good results using new hard drives from ebay that already have the fireware loaded.  Plug and play.

I believe there's firmware modules you'd also have to change out but not certain on that.  Hopefully someone more knowledgable will pick up this thread.

Upgrade process If the firmware upgrade process fails, send the files by connecting the printer to a PC through the parallel port. Open a DOS session by clicking Start , Programs , Command Prompt/MS DOS . Type C: and press Enter . Type cd Program Files , press Enter . Type cd Hewlett-Packard , and press Enter . Type cd HP Designjet System Maintenance , and press Enter . The location should now be C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Designjet System Maintenance. HP Designjet 5500 From the above location, type copy /b DJ5000_xxxxx.UPG LPT1 (where xxxxx refers to the new firmware revision, i.e S5601_rtl_complete1). Proceed with the following steps before pressing Enter on the keyboard. NOTE: The actual filename to be downloaded will change with each new revision of firmware. At the printer, turn the power to the printer off, using the power switch at the back of the printer. Depress, and hold down the TOP key, while turning the power to the printer back on. NOTE: If the operator cannot reach the front panel keys and power switch at the same time, simply turn the printer on, walk to the front panel and depress/hold the TOP key. The printer allows approximately 15 seconds for the operator to reach the front panel and press the appropriate keys. Continue to hold down the keys until the front panel display shows a list of four selections. Highlight and select Upgrade Firmware . The front panel will display Firmware Upgrade . Press Enter on the computers keyboard to send the file to the printer. Firmware files should now update.
