We have a unit but have been told that print heads spares are not available anymore as the unit is obsolete

That is correct, the HP 11 printheads are obsolete  https://www.hp.com/us-en/printers/large-format/designjet-supplies-discontinuance.html 

 

YOu might find some new old stock online
