When printed on coated paper, the inks have a strong odor.

My office prints many large scale visuals and there is a strong odor to the inks after the visuals have been printed and layed out to dry. Our clients have mentioned this to us also. It's hard to describe the smell. I've heard others compare it to a chemical smell.

What can we do to reduce this smell? Is there a way to avoid this?

The inks we use are HP 771A, formerly HP 771. What is the difference in the upgrade or is it just a name change?

Hopefully someone has some answers.

Thank you.

Hi scottmcmahon,

Understand that you and your customer may experience some smell on the printout, before that in case you are using not HP original ink, below statement may not able to help as HP ink is specially engineered, Original HP inks are designed with the environment in mind and compliance to requirements.

The difference between HP 771 vs 771A is the ink volume and they should perform the same. In the event of strong smell from the printout, the media type play a role. For example, HP has a quick dry media which should improve the situation, for compatibility and better quality media, please refer to

Another way is to ensure proper ventilation witin the room to improve potential ozone building.

Hope this help improve the situation.
