The audio was working out of the box (last week) . I added a 512G m.2 HP SSD , installed windows 10 home on it; I downloaded all the drivers for this model (Pavilion 590-p0076) from the HP support/download web page, and installed them on the SSD.
The audio is not working, there's an "x" over the speaker icon in the tray, when I click on it diagnostics say
there are no speakers or headphones plugged in. I followed all the suggestions in the software. I downloaded
the HP diagnostics and tested the audio, but it reported "No device found" , test cancelled. I tried another set of
speakers, no luck.
I booted up on an ubuntu usb thumb drive, the audio works fine on both sets of speakers. So its not
a hardware problem.
In the Device Manager, under "Sound, video and game controllers" I have only "AMD High Definition Audio Device"
and it says "working properly"
I suspect I have the wrong device driver for this AMD/ryzen based computer... that HP has the wrong
driver on the download page for 590-p0076... could that be?
Any ideas for me?
Thank you

Hi:
Under the Sound, video and game controllers device manager category, you should also be seeing the Realtek HD audio device.
If the driver was missing, normally there would be a generic High Definition audio device listed there.
You have nothing listed there (other than the AMD HDMI audio device), and that isn't good.
Normally I would say there is a hardware issue, but you have already ruled that out.
This Realtek audio driver should have worked...

Did you install the AMD chipset driver and restart the PC, before installing the audio driver?

The only other suggestion I can offer, would be to try the Audio driver directly from Realtek.
The problem is that it appears the one from Realtek is a much older driver from July of 2017.
Accept the agreement. Download and install the 64 bit driver and restart the PC.

Thanks Paul - You fixed me!
The realtek 64bit driver for windows 10 installed without any indication of problems, but
there still just the AMD High Def Audio device there, under "Sound, video and game controllers".
I did notice that under "System devices" the "AMD Audio CoProcessor" and "AMD High Def Audio Controller"
have exclamation points in their icons indicating something is messed up. I'm not sure how long those
indicators have been there. I uninstalled those two, and then "scanned for new hardware"
The Realtek High Def Audio driver popped up where it should, the exclamation points went away,
and sound returned.
Thanks again
