Audio Issue

HP Recommended
HP Spectre 13-4100 x360 Convertible PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Since I've bought this laptop ( HP Spectre x360 13 4102TU ), I'm facing issues regarding the audio of this laptop. If I restart it or shut it down the next it starts the audio icon on the bottom right has a red cross over it (sometimes) and the audio doesn't work. I've tried to update it and it works for sometime then it gives up. Windows or HP assistant doesn't help either. I have to uninstall and then install the driver all over again (Driver being from Conexant ISST Audio Driver ver Now up to that it was working and was tolerating all this but after the latest update of Windows 10 where it allows you to switch audio between headphones and speakers from the bottom left speaker icon directly, the headphone doesn't work. Speakers are working fine and when I plug in my headphone that is shown to be plugged in as well but no volume (it's not muted and I've trid sliding the volume levels up and down). Now when I swtich the audio from headphones to speakers with the headphone inserted the speakers still work. And as the windows doesn't seem to see the problem there so I can't even use windows assistant to fix this issue. My laptop is upto date with latest drivers. Kindly provide guidance to fix this issue because I'm out of options.

Hi @asho07,

Good Day. Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that you require assistance regarding audio issues. I will be really glad to assist you here. Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you check by completely uninstalling the drivers again reinstalling it from the HP support site?

For now, try these steps:

  • Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers. Then check the box delete the software for this device.
  • Then restart the computer and update the chipset and audio drivers from this link:  and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Now check if the situation has been corrected.

If the issue persists, then try these steps:

  • Windows Audio is a Windows service that manages audio for Windows-based programs. If at all this service is stopped due to any reason, audio devices will not function properly.
To fix audio services, open the run command and launch services.msc.
  • In the services window search for Windows Audio and right-click on it to select Start to start the audio service.
  • And ensure the Startup Type is set to Automatic.
  • Click Apply and OK.
Restart the computer and check if it works.

Also, follow the directions from this link: (HP Spectre 13-4100 and 13-4200 X360 Convertible PCs - Audio Does Not Work After Installing Windows 10 Anniversary Update) and install the drivers and check if it gets fixed.

  • If the problem continues, then follow the all the relevant steps that best match your issue from this guided troubleshooter  (HP PCs - No Sound on HP Computer)and check if it gets fixed.

Finally, check by creating a new local user account as an administrator from this link: and this should fix the issue for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient.

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂
