HP Pavilion Desktop - 550-126
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So ive been having this issue for a few weeks now where the only audio that plays from my computer is ear piercing static or barely audible noises when I try watching a video. It started when I took a 1060 graphics card out of my computer and it scraped the motherboard a bit in the section labeled audio. (i dont know if thats the problem but i hope you understand my suspicions)  I've tried almost every possible solution including: updating audi drivers in the device manager, using the audio troubleshooter when you right click on the speaker in the bottom right, and i've also tried a factory reset, sadly none of this has worked. I have tried an estensive hardware test from the HP support assistant and that said everything was fine (my bleeding ears said otherwise). If there is anything that might provide help to my situation please share. I will be answering followup questions.

@QUACKNSTACK
Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue.
I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue: ( you can skip the troubleshooting steps if you've performed already )

Perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Use the troubleshooting tool in Windows

The audio troubleshooting tool in Windows can automatically fix common audio recording and audio playback problems with your computer. Run the troubleshooting tool using the following steps:

  • In Windows, type find and fix audio into Search, or right-click the speaker icon https://hp.dezide.com/data/pictures/hp-external/web_author/guid-a7774d00-7a27-4b96-ab1c-b2f8a7083ba0-low_86905_en.jpg in the taskbar and select Troubleshoot sound problems.
  • Select Find and fix audio playback problems or Find and fix audio recording problems from the Search results.
  • Click Next.
  • Select the device you want to troubleshoot and click Next.
  • Wait while the troubleshooter detects problems and makes changes (or prompts you to make changes).
  • When the troubleshooter is done, the Troubleshooting has completed page is displayed, listing any problems found and what changes were made to the computer.
  • Click Close.
  • If a recommended action is displayed, select Apply this fix.

Restoring the audio driver in HP Recovery Manager:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Recovery Manager.
  2. Click Reinstall drivers and/or applications.
  3. Select the audio driver in the list, and then click Install.
  4. Wait for the driver to reinstall. When the installation is complete, click OK.
  5. Close HP Recovery Manager and then restart your computer.
  6. Test for sound. If the audio problem persists after reinstalling the driver, try updating the driver using Device Manager.

Updating the audio driver using Device Manager:

Make sure the audio device is enabled and then update the audio driver using Device Manager as follows:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
  2. Double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. If a sound device is listed with a down arrow, the device is disabled. Right-click the sound device name and select Enable to re-enable the device.
  4. With the sound device enabled, right-click the sound device and select Update Driver Software.
  5. Click Search automatically for updated driver software.
  6. Windows checks for and installs any updated drivers found. The window displays whether the computer already has the latest available driver or if Windows was able to successfully update the audio driver.
  7. If a window opens asking you to restart the computer, restart the computer.
  8. Test for sound. If the audio problem persists after updating the driver, continue to the next step.

If you completed these steps and the latest driver was already installed, use the following steps to uninstall and then reinstall the driver:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
  2. Double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the sound device and select Uninstall.
  4. Restart the computer to reinstall the driver.
  5. Test for sound. If the audio problem persists after reinstalling the driver, continue to the next step.

Just checking in on your issue, surely its been solved by now.  However, if it hasnt perhaps you would like to try this approach

1. save all pertinent data

-registration keys for any products you may have installed using a keyfinder (just google software keyfinder theres a few).

-create an installation usb (8gb minimum) straight from microsoft assuming windows 10 here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10  or heres the direct link to the download https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209.

-the above will download software called mediacreation or something like that click it, it will detect your windows version and follow the prompts this may take a little while to finish.

-ensure that all of your photos/videos/documents of any importance are stored on an external drive.

2. shut that noisey thing off

3. plug in the usb directly to the tower dont use a hub or anything.

4. (important) the next step will reinstall windows.

5. turn the computer back on and windows will greet you with selection prompts that are like the ones when you first purchased the machine.

6. follow the prompts, personally seeing as which you gathered all the data you wanted onto the external hard drive, I would erase the disk entirely and do a fresh installation, but the choice is yours.

7. after the installation has started you will be greeted by cortana, your audio issues will be ultimately revealed at this point but you have all of the data you need and if it turns out that the audio traces have been scratched, then replacement of the board itself is all that is needed, and unless you have a custom machine, the boards are WAYYYY cheaper than to actually replace the machine.  You can find the board's name in hp product specifications, simply search your computers name in the search bar at the top of this page adding "Product Specifications" to the search at the end.

I hope this helped, had the same problem with a customers machine 2 weeks ago the reinstallation of windows was all that was necessary.
