My new HP desktop has an HDMI port. Does it send out only video, video plus stereo, or video plus 5.1 ?

Its normal HDMI out port will send out video and audio (stereo). For 5.1, depending on what is the device, you need to setup from your speakers and that device.

Thank you for your prompt reply - the HDMI cable will go from the computer to a surround sound receiver with a 5.1 processor in it. So, if the cable carries the 5.1 info, the receiver will decode it. There's no manual for the computer so no way to know if the sound card in it sends out the 5.1.

Thanks again,

Jeff
