I paired my bluetooth headphones with the computer and when I turn on the headphones the computer's internal speakers turn off and vice versa.  Then I connected external speakers to the computer.  When I turn on the headphones, the external speakers continue to work and no sound comes from the headphones.  Then I unplug the external speakers and sound goes to the headphones.  On my old HP, when I turned on the headphones, the external speakers turned off and the headphones produced sound automatically.  I did not have to unplug the external speakers to use the headphones.  Is there a way configure my new computer to switch between the bluetooth headphones and external speakers automatically?

I reviewed your post and I understand that the audio is not switching automatically when you connect the headphones.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

The audio switches automatically only when a new audio device is connected. Say, for example, I have my external speakers and Bluetooth headphones (paired previously) connected to the computer, and when I turn on the Bluetooth headphone the audio switches automatically to headphones. However, if both are connected to the computer and I wish to switch the audio then I need to click on the speaker icon on the bottom right of my computer and switch the audio manually.

I hope that answers your question and you have a great day!
