HP Recommended

I'm unable to record music on my HP Envy 34. It's hard to describe but voice seems ok, and the vocals in songs are audible but all the other frequencies seem to be very faint or completely absent. As a test I recorded the exact same track using the same microphone and the same speaker using the same simple software (Windows Voice Recorder), using my  laptop and it works fine. Could this be something in the HP Envy settings or is it likely to be a faulty audio card? Any suggestions please? Many thanks!
