Connecting second monitor disables audio.

Connecting second monitor disables audio. Doing online tutorials on a laptop alone is a pain in the neck.
How can I handle this? Connection is by HDMI cable.

Plugging in hdmi cable the laptop may be trying to output sound via hdmi to speakers such as on a tv. Right click the Speaker icon in system tray near the time. From the menu click Playback devices and make sure it is set it to use speakers. Or if the second monitor has speakers built in try setting Playback to hdmi.

No, it is the second monitor that is connected by HDMI cable, and connecting the second monitor disables audio regardless of whether I use powered external speakers or the laptop's own tiny speakers.
