HP ENVY Desktop - 795-0009na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

At some point over the past 12 months or so, the DVD drive in my HP ENVY 795-0009na stopped recognising & reading CDs, while still recognising and reading DVDs.

I've concluded that it's nothing to do with the built-in DVD drive, as I get EXACTLY the same issue with an external DVD Drive (Samsung Slim DVD Writer).

I'm wondering whether this is due to a particular Windows Update. I'm running Windows 10 64-bit.

Hi

there may not be a connection between the two
A reader can continue to read DVDs, but no longer CDs, vice versa..
You need to do several tests
use different cds, mainly commercial, not damaged..
then follow the steps here

Thanks, Prométhée,

I forgot to mention that the external DVD Drive that doesn't read CDs on my desktop PC does in fact read CDs on someone else's laptop (although not on mine), which is why I suspect it's not dwn to faulty DVD drives.

PS:

The internal and external DVD drives are detected, it's just that they read DVDs while showing CDs as having Zero content.

disconnect the second usb drive

try Step 6: Clear the upper and lower registry filters

Many thanks again.

Unfortunately, there are no lower and upper filters in that registry key.

I'm still puzzled...

The PC recognises that it's a CD that's inserted, but shows no content.

My laptop is the same, but the other laptop on which I've tested the external DVD Drive does show the CD's content and plays it.

I checked just in case, because it's been a long time since I looked, and now I have w11

and not for me too

maybe is that why they write
"If a LowerFilters value "
I had done this manipulation a long time ago with windows 7

Try in this case
computer off, unplug the power plug
press the on/off button for a few minutes
unplug the cd player completely
then restart, with just keyboard / mouse monitor
After complete startup , repeat the operation , and reconnect the internal CD player
to restart
wait if necessary for the installation to complete completely, check if the drive is well recognized explorer, and disk management
if so, then try a commercial music cd

Note, I didn't understand what you mean here.

My laptop is the same, but the other laptop on which I've tested the external DVD Drive does show the CD's content and plays it.

Thanks again for your reply. To clarify what I meant:

I have a Desktop PC with an internal DVD Drive and I also have an external (Samsung) DVD Drive.

I also have a latop with no internal DVD Drive.

My PC recognises DVDs and plays them from the internal Drive, and it also recognises DVDs and plays them from the external Drive when I connect it to my PC via USB.

However, while my Desktop PC recognises when a CD is inserted into its internal Drive, it cannot read or play its content.

Exactly the same happens when a CD is inserted into the external Drive when it is connected to my PC via USB.

And exactly the same happens when the external DVD Drive is connected to my laptop via USB

What is puzzling is that my wife's laptop CAN read and play CDs when inserted into the external DVD Drive connected to her laptop via USB.

Conclusion: there seems to a setting in Windows 10 in both my Desktop PC and my laptop that prevents the reading and playing of a CD.

ok

I understand a little better, no matter the type of cd then?
You have an idea, of a difference, between the moment when it worked then not at all, an installation, update
what you would have done on your computers, and not Madam suddenly?

Sorry, I'm afraid I can't find a solution, I hope I don't waste your time..
so ,  sorry, I will leave soon, you may not have any more answer from me, before tomorrow ..
