HP Pavilion Desktop 510-p030
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I own a HP Pavilion Desktop 510 -p030 machine. The machine has one PCI-e slot. After I installed a sound card in the slot (Sound Blaster by Creative Labs), and installed the drivers for the card, video would no longer play on the machine if I connected hardware such as a headset to the corresponding port on the card.

I suspect that by default the PCI-e slot is configured to "accept" only a video card. Does anyone if it is possible to re-configure the slot to accept a sound card?

@sabotta, welcome to the forum.

The problem that you have is caused by the fact that the Integrated graphics will not work when a card is plugged into the PCIe x16 slot.  Here is the Motherboard Specifications page.  Look at the section titled Video/Integrated graphics and read the Note.  I know your card is not a graphics card, but the motherboard doesn't take that into consideration.  It just knows that a card is plugged in.

Thanks. I didn't realize that there was a note under "Integrated graphics", as I didn't realize it was clickable.

Based on this note and the one under "Integrated Audio", (Integrated sound is not available if a graphics card is installed.), it sounds like neither a graphics card or a sound card can be installed in the PCI-e slot. If that is true, then what can I use this slot for?

You are welcome, @sabotta.

You can use a video card in the PCIe x16 slot.  However, when you install a video card the ports for the Integrated Video can't be used.  You would use the ports on the card.  In some models you can use both simultaneously.

That makes sense, regarding the ports. Thank you for your help.
