@bill_panorama,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Support Community,

First thing, If the issue started soon after an update, I would suggest you could try performing a system restore:

HP PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 10, 😎

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your PC (Such as Bios, Chipset and Audio drivers)

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to uninstall the audio drivers from device manager:

Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers.

Then check the box delete the software for this device.

Now restart the computer and then update the Bios, Chipset and Audio drivers on your PC from our HP support website, using this link.

Let me know how it goes for further assistance!

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Click the “Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

Thanks Jeet.

I went through all the procedures you outlined. I am still losing sound, and the event log is still audiodg.exe crashing.

@bill_panorama,

In this scenario, I would suggest you could try to run the test on the audio from F2 (Please remember to capture the failure ID for further assistance).

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.

  • The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen

  • Select Component tests.

List of the Component tests

  • Please initiate a test on the Audio - The Audio Playback Test checks your system to make sure the audio device is functioning properly. During the test, a few music notes are played in sequence and then repeated. This test takes 1 minute to complete. Click Audio, then click Run once. Choose either the speakers or the headphones. When asked, enter the number of notes you heard.

If the test passes, as mentioned this could be a software or driver related issue. I would suggest you perform a system reset on the PC.

For more details, please follow this link: HP PCs - Resetting Your Computer (Windows 10)

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes for further assistance.

That said, If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Have a great day!

I just wanted to follow up on this.

None of the suggestions made helped - I did find one further hint: I would get a notification that an audi device had been unplugged, followed by a niticifaction that a device had been plugged in. This despite the fact nothing of the sort had happened. Sometime, but not always, I lost sound completely for all devices, and some applications which depend on sound would fail to load. There were also lots of eventwr entries pointing at Conexant.

I finally 'fixed' the problem by plugging my speakers into an output port on one of my HDMI screen. I did that about two weeks ago, and have had no issues since.

Everything points to this being a problem with Conexant. One other aspect is that I frequently change between users on my desktop. I don't know if this is relevant.

Looking at the internet this seems to be an issue going back several years.
