Your system has a combo audio / mike "headset". make sure you are using the correct cable
HP uses CTIA pinout. Make sure the connector is pushed in all the way and not blocked by a frame or hole in the case that might be too tiny to allow the plug to go all the way in
Apple headset will not work nor a plain headphone
