My HP pavilion 575 desktop PC abruptly quit outputting sound. Blue tooth devices seem to work ok, but my wired speakers (and I have tried different external speakers) do not put out sound. I've tried running the trouble shooter, downloaded driver updates and some other suggestions from the internet, but still no sound. Do I need a new sound card? If so, what kind.

Hi @Alanna67,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with sound issues like that. Before considering a new sound card, let's go through a few additional troubleshooting steps.
Check Sound Settings:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings."
- Under "Output," make sure the correct device is selected (your wired speakers).
Verify Device Connections:
- Double-check that your wired speakers are properly connected to the correct audio jack on your desktop.
Inspect Audio Settings in Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager (right-click Start and select it).
- Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section.
- Right-click your audio device and select "Properties."
- Check the "Driver" tab for updates or rollback options if a recent update might have caused the issue.
Check for Disabled Devices:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Sounds."
- Go to the "Playback" tab.
- Right-click in the window and ensure "Show Disabled Devices" is checked. If you see your speakers listed as disabled, enable them.
Reinstall Audio Drivers:
- Uninstall the audio driver from Device Manager (right-click and select "Uninstall device").
- Restart your PC to allow Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.
BIOS/UEFI Check:
- Sometimes, audio settings in the BIOS/UEFI can affect sound output. Check your BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure onboard audio is enabled.
If none of these steps resolve the issue and you suspect the sound card might be faulty, you could consider a replacement. For an HP Pavilion 575 desktop, a basic internal sound card should suffice if you decide to replace it. Look for models that are compatible with your motherboard and operating system. However, most desktops these days use integrated sound which should typically suffice unless you need specific features or higher audio quality.
Alternatively, an external USB sound card might be a convenient solution and can often be plug-and-play, eliminating the need to open your PC case.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
