cd and dvd player makes sounds but does nothing

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

my cd/dvd player hasnt worked forever. the player itself makes a noise like its trying, all the software and drivers seem to be okay, its just that when you put the disc in nothing happens, after about 10 seconds of the disc spinning it just stops.

Good Day.  Thank you for posting your query in the HP community.  I read the post regarding issues with the DVD drive after a windows 10 update I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Has it never worked at all?
  • Did it stop working after a power outage or surge?

For now, try these steps:

  • Link 1: (HP PCs - Drive Cannot Read Discs (Windows 7)
  • Link 2: (HP PCs - CD/DVD Drive Is Not Detected (Windows 7)
  • Link 3: (HP PCs - CD or DVD Cannot Burn Discs (Windows 7)
  • Link 4: (HP TouchSmart 600 Series Desktop PC - Removing a Stuck Disc)
  • Although these links are for Windows 7, the steps are relevant for Windows 10 also.
  • Based on your exact issue, perform all the prescribed steps from these links.
  • Now check if the issue gets resolved.
  • If it persists, then it is a hardware issue and the DVD drive needs to be replaced. I am being honest about it without beating around the bush by keeping your best interest in mind.

If the issue persists, then the computer needs to be repaired. If the computer is more than 3 years old then service options with HP are no longer available because the original suppliers and manufacturers who manufacture and supply the parts to Hp to build and service the computer don't do so anymore. So please contact a local Best Buy or Staples technician or any local technician to get it repaired.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient.
