I have a hand-me-down HP Pavilion 590-p0054. According to the box, it comes with "5.1 surround sound." But I am getting no sound from it. Are the speakers built in or do I still have to plug in speakers or headphone? Thanks!

There are no speakers built in. The device requires some separate device to produce sound, whether external speakers or a HDMI device, such as a TV. The 5.1 sound will be passed thru the HDMI or you can connect 5.1 capable speakers, assuming you do not use the HDMI.
