sound is very low with all the controls at mximum

There are a few volume controls to manage.

 

The first one is the little speaker icon by the clock on your desktop.

 

The next one would be your monitor's on-screen display, the buttons on the back will give you access to volume control if your monitor has speakers.

 

Also your headphones may have an in-line volume control on the cord or ear-control.

 

If you've checked them all(oh don't forget a physical volume control on external speakers if using them)

then try unplugging the cord from the sound output and plugging it back in.
