BDDVDRW CH30L (Blue-Ray disc device) Disappears from Boot Options Menu After First Time

HP Recommended
HP ENVY Phoenix 810-645qe
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have an HP Envy Phoenix 810-445qe running Win7 64-bit. I did some research on how to start up from the BD-ROM device. Also, Belarc Advisor program told me that the UEFI Secure Boot was already disabled on this device.

I found that it was a simple as pressing ESC to get the Startup Menu, pressing F9 to get the Boot Options menu, then using the arrow keys to select the BDDVDRW CH30L device and pressing Enter.

I tried this, and it did show my BDDVDRW CH30L device under UEFI Devices, right after Windows Boot Manager. My two other USB drives also showed up under legacy devices. I was able to select my BDDVDRW (BD-ROM) device and start up from the inserted DVD. Yay!

My exuberance was short-lived. I decided to check out another bootable DVD I bought, so I changed discs, shut off the computer and restarted it. But the next time, after pressing ESC and F9, the Boot Options menu does not show the BDDVDRW device. I wondered whether I needed to go back into Windows and back out again in order to somehow enable choices on the UEFI menu. But, no, that didn't work. I simply can't get the device to show up again.

When I try starting from ATAPI CD/DVD device, it does nothing, just ignores the Enter key (I assume because Secure Boot is disabled?).

What do I have to do to get the BDDVDRW CH30L device to show up every time on the Boot Options menu?

Thank you for your help.

@GammaRayBurst,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the Blue-ray device is not showing in boot menu options.

I’d love to help!

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • Is the DVD you are using bootable?
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?

NOTE: If the DVD is not bootable you may not see that blue ray device in the boot menu options.

While you respond to that, I recommend you enable legacy support on the computer and then check if it helps.

Follow the steps in the below article to enable legacy support.

https://hp.care/2E7LzDM

NOTE: Steps are same for Windows 7 as well.

Let me know how it goes and you have a good day ahead.

If the solution provided helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. Your feedback counts!

Take care.

Cheers!

Hello,

Thank you for responding. In the meantime, I discovered some additional information...

First, I have two DVDs that I created that were supposed to be bootable.

1. DVD #1 was created by Acronis True Image 2018. This was the DVD I put in there originally, then pressed ESC at boot to get the Startup Menu, then pressed F9 to get the Boot Menu. And after doing that, I saw the UEFI: BDDVDRW CH30L  choice on the menu, and was able to boot from it, view my available backups, etc. (My nonbootable USB devices containing my backup files were listed under Legacy devices.)

At the time I wrote to you, I apparently hadn't tried putting this DVD #1 back in. When I tried that just a bit ago, I see the BDDVDRW CH30L listed again as a UEFI device. (Photo attached at bottom.)

[Just FYI... Belarc Advisor's information about my computer reports that Secure Boot is disabled. I have read that Windows 8.x and Windows 10 require Secure Boot. but Windows 7 doesn't use it. My SATA0 hard drive, Sandisk cache drive and USB external drives are all listed under Legacy Boot Sources, so I believe that the Windows Boot Manager handles the SATA0. When I booted from the Acronis DVD, the program was able to read the backups from my Legacy USB drives just fine.]

2. DVD #2 was purchased as .iso download for Win7 Professional 64-bit SP1 from Easy Recovery Essentials. I downloaded the file, clicked on it, and then clicked "Burn" in Windows Explorer, which created a supposedly bootable DVD.

When I tested the two DVDs a bit ago, I realized that when I remove DVD #1, insert DVD #2, shut the computer off, and then boot up again, I get the F9 Boot Menu with BDDVDRW CH30L missing, and only Windows Boot Manager listed under UEFI devices. (Second photo at bottom.) I tried moving the arrow to the ATAPI CD/DVD item under Legacy, and nothing happens, so either the DVD has an error, and isn't actually bootable (although it looks as thou it should be), or Legacy devices are being managed through the software, and not directly through the boot menu?? (I haven't checked the actual status of Legacy Boot under the BIOS.)

The strange thing is that DVD #2 looks as though it should be bootable, but there's something that the BIOS doesn't like about this DVD that it's treating it differently... Can you spot anything?

I did a directory llisting of each from the command prompt, saved to text files.

DVD #1 (Acronis), which it says is Linux...

@GammaRayBurst

It looks like you were interacting with The_Fossette, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out. I'm KrazyToad & I'm at your service.

I have gone through your case and the Bluray drive seems to be working fine since you were able to write those DVDs.

To confirm the functionality, you can run a Test on the drive

- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.
- When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the main menu, click Component Tests and Optical Drive

I suggest you order the Recovery Media directly from HP .

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number and phone number appear.

Keep me posted if you need further assistance

Thank you

I found the answer. The Blu-Ray device shows differently under Legacy Boot Sources ("SATA2") than it does under UEFI Boot Sources ("UEFI: BDDVDRW CH30L Drive"). I had previously thought that SATA2 was one of the hard drives. Also, the wording "ATAPI CD/DVD Drive" is simply a label, so no wonder it doesn't do anything! The SATA2 is indented underneath, and that is the choice that starts up the DVD. Once I understood that the SATA2 was what I needed to choose, I selected that and pressed Enter, and everything worked fine!

I have another problem, but it no longer fits under the original description, so I'l post it as a new subject.
