Can't use DIMM1 on my motherboard

Pavillion 500-205t
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I install memory in DIMM1 (Memory slot A) with or without installing memory in DIMM2 (Memory slot B) the computer will not boot, or at least I can't see it boot, and in the upper left corner of the display it alternates between displaying Analog and HDMI. I have a Memphis-S motherboard and am using DDR3 PC 12800 1600 MHz memory. Can you please help me with this issue? Thanks.

Can't use DIMM1 on my motherboard

Hi,

Are you using the original HP dimm as delivered with the PC?

Can't use DIMM1 on my motherboard

I don't really remember how much RAM it came with, but, I think I upgraded the original memory from 4GB to 8 GB (one memory stick) and have been using the same RAM in DIMM2 for about four years. The problem occurred when I tried to upgrade to 16GB using a matched set of two 8GB modules. These came as a kit from Corsair. However, when I put the memory I have been using for four years in DIMM1 it did the same thing. I did this to see if it was the memory that I was using for the upgrade or the DIMM slot. DIMM1 hasn't been used for about four years.

Can't use DIMM1 on my motherboard

Hi,

I suggest that you update your PC to the latest HP diagnostics and run a full set with the known good dimm. Then swap the known good dimm out and again run a full set of disgnostics.  Let's make sure that both dimms are good.

I would also check back with Corsair and sure that you in fact do have the correct dimms for your PC.  Check the CAS latency for these dimms as the HP dimms are all 11.

Also, update the BIOS is you haven't already done so as it addresses a memory issue.  The retest both dimms.

With both dimms installed, clear the CMOS and see if you can reset the memory timings.

Can't use DIMM1 on my motherboard

Big Dave - Thanks for the suggestions. I think I do have the most current BIOS update installed (11/11/2015). I'm pretty sure it isn't the Corsair memory since when I used one of their modules in DIMM slot 2 it POSTed and booted fine. I do have the most current version of the HP support assisstant installed. Does that provide me with the most current diagnostics? Could it be that the slot contacts are tarnished enough so that they are not making good contact with the DIMM? Is it safe to use electronic contact cleaner on the DIMM slot?

I will follow up on your suggestions and let you know of my findings. Thanks again.

Can't use DIMM1 on my motherboard

Hi,

Just installing and removing the dimm a few times will remove tarnish from the contact points if that is your concern.  Tarnish has never been a problem for me or with any PC that I have ever worked on.

You still didn't provide any feedback to my other suggestions.

Your first consideration should be HP Sales or HP Support when considering memory replacement or upgrades. If you want to consider other manufacturers then the easiest way to avoid memory problems is to contact one of the major memory manufacturers. I am recommending that you try the memory tools from these manufacturers: Corsair, Kingston and Crucial. Once you have determined the dimms that you need, then contact sales or technical support to verify that you have selected the correct dimms. If you buy directly from the manufacturers, then they will stand behind their products.

Can't use DIMM1 on my motherboard

Hi Big Dave - I went out to the Corsair website to verify my memory selection, but, they don't list the maker of my motherboard, which is Pegatron, as an option in their memory selection tool. Therefore, I was not able to determine if the memory I bought is the correct memory. However, the specs listed for my motherboard on the HP support website do match with the specs for the memory I bought. I did determine that the tested latency, according to the specs on the Corsair website, is 10-10-10-27. Also, and again, when I put a Corsair module in DIMM1 it boots fine. when I switch it to DIMM2 it does not. The same results occur when I use the memory module that has worked fine in DIMM2 for nearly four years. As far as diagnostics go, is there a separate tool for that on the HP website apart from  the HP support assistant?

Thanks again for your help.
