I own a HP Elitedesk 800 g2 mini. It came with Windows 10 Pro installed on it. After using the computer for a year and trying various operating systems, I can suddenly no longer do a clean install of any OS as they always fail..

  • With Windows 10 and 11 the computer freezes at the "just a moment" screen after the first reboot. I used the official Microsoft media creation tool to make the bootable USBs.
  • If I try installing Debian I get the error 'GRUB-install dummy' failed.
  • If I try installing Fedora I get the error "Bootloader installation has failed: Failed to set new efi boot target. This is most likely a kernel or firmware bug"

I have tried enabling and disabling secure boot and just about every other setting in the bios to no avail. I thought maybe there was a problem with the nvme drive I was installing onto, so I switched to a spinning HDD but I had the same problem. I then removed all drives and tried installing to an external USB hard drive with the same errors again. I can usually complete the first part of the operating system installer without issue - the problem seems to have something to do with installing the boot loader. "Live" usb versions of linux distros appear to work fine. I updated the bios to the latest version. I have tried removing all external usb devices.

What could possibly be causing this problem? I am at my wits end having spent days installing and reinstalling trying to get something to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
